For A Christian Friend Going Through Depression

Loving Lord I come to You on behalf of a friend and colleague that I care about but who is going through such deep depression, and sadly he seems to have given up on life and does not want to speak to me or anyone else – causing him to sink lower in the cess-pit of doubting Your love, despairing of life and sinking into an ever deepening depression.

Lord I pray that You would meet this man at his point of need and give Him the reassurance of Your love in his spirit and Your hope in his heart. I ask You Lord, to lift the curtain of doubt that has played such havoc with his assurance of salvation in Y0u and which has caused him to walk away from the joy he once knew in You.

Give me wisdom as I lift my friend up in prayer show me the way that I can be a support to him in his time of trouble. Meet him Lord at his point of need I pray, and restore to him the joy of Your salvation and peace that only comes from You. I ask this in Jesus name,

Amen

The Serenity Prayer by Reinhold Niebuhr

God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change;
courage to change the things I can;
and wisdom to know the difference.
Living one day at a time;
Enjoying one moment at a time;
Accepting hardships as the pathway to peace;
Taking, as He did, this sinful world as it is, not as I would have it;
Trusting that He will make all things right if I surrender to His Will;
That I may be reasonably happy in this life
and supremely happy with Him Forever in the next.
Amen.

Prayers for My Depression

O God, as I am feeling depressed, may this heaviness speak to me. Help me listen to what depression may have to teach me at this time. I am depressed. Guide me to a person, a place and resources to support me during these moments. I feel deep sadness to the point of not wanting to be around people and not wanting to do anything. Like Your prophet Jeremiah, I question my own existence and value. Is my life worth living? Console me, Holy Spirit, when I feel undesirable and unlovable. Amen.

To Recall God’s Promises In Time Of Depression

Lord Jesus I have proved in my life that when I am weighed down with sin and cares and the worries of life, that an evil depression invariably descends on me and drags me down into greater despair.

Lord I don’t want to succumb to this act of unbelief in my life – for I have learned that depression and despair are the fruit of unbelief while the fruit of the spirit are the treasures You give to those that hope in the Lord – no matter what problems life may throw at us.

Help me not to be afraid or discouraged when things go wrong… not to dwell on the problem, but when evil thoughts arise in my heart, bring to my mind Your word of truth I pray, for Your word is health and healing and strength to my soul.

Help me to remember that the eternal God is my refuge and strength, and underneath are Your everlasting arms to support and carry me. Help Me Lord to cast all my cares on You for You have promised to sustain me and never to let me fall. Help me to remember that You are the one that can heal my broken-heart and bind up all my wounds and help me not to be anxious for anything…

Lord I lift this prayer to You – with thanksgiving knowing that You are a God Who hears and answers all that cry out to You.. so guard my heart and mind I pray, in Christ Jesus .

Amen

A Prayer for Depression #1

God bless all who are battling those inner demons of depression, loneliness, unworthiness, and hopelessness. Shine Your warm Heavenly Light down upon all of us, Lord, who are looking for our soul mates. Guide us to find peace, happiness, and contentment in our lives and within ourselves.

Amen.

A Prayer for Depression #2

My Lord God, I have no idea where I am going.
I do not see the road ahead of me.
I cannot know for certain where it will end.
Nor do I really know myself, and the fact that I think that I am following your will does not mean that I am actually doing so.
But I believe that the desire to please you does in fact please you.
And I hope I have that desire in all that I am doing.
I hope that I will never do anything apart from that desire.
And I know that if I do this
you will lead me by the right road
though I may know nothing about it.
Therefore will I trust you always
though I may seem to be lost and in the shadow of death.
I will not fear, for you are ever with me,
and you will never leave me to face my perils alone.

— by Thomas Merton

A Prayer for Depression #3

Dear Jesus,
Help me to spread Your fragrance everywhere I go.
Flood my soul with Your spirit and life.
Penetrate and possess my whole being so utterly,
that my life may only be a radiance of Yours.
Shine through me, and be so in me
that every soul I come in contact with may feel Your presence in my soul.
Let them look up and see no longer me,
but only Jesus!
Stay with me and then I shall begin to shine as you shine,
so to shine as to be a light to others;
the light, O Jesus will be all from You;
none of it will be mine;
it will be you, shining on others through me.
Let me thus praise You the way You love best,
by shining on those around me.
Let me preach You without preaching,
not by words but by my example,
by the catching force of the sympathetic influence of what I do,
the evident fullness of the love my heart bears to You.
Amen.

Prayer for Depression #4

Father, I cry out to You
Lift my eyes to see hope rise.

I cry out to You
Change the colour of my thoughts to a rainbow day.

I cry out to You
Blow away the dark clouds to bring Your light.

I cry out to You
Break into my heavy heart and breathe Your life into me.

That in the morning I may rise to a rainbow day,
Full of Your light and breathing Your life.

Lord, I cry out to You.

Amen.

Prayers for My Heart

Prayer For My Girlfriend’s Depression

Heavenly Lord, I lift up my girl-friend to You today, knowing that over the past weeks and months she has been getting increasingly depressed – and it seems that this depression is getting a tight hold on her whole personality and thinking. Lord she has changed from being relaxed and seemingly happy to becoming moody and depressed.

Father I pray that You would search her heart to discover what is at the root of the problems and restore to her the joy she used to have in You. Give me the wisdom to understand the problem and the compassion to help her through this difficult time, and help me to be a source of comfort and help, in Jesus name I pray,

Amen

Prayers for Resentment of Depression

God, I do not like it when I’m depressed. It slows me down and makes me feel what I don’t want to feel: immense sadness for myself, others and our world. Sustain me in this time and hold me close. Amen.

Prayer for Strength When Battling Depression

God help me for I am battling the inner demons of depression, loneliness, and hopelessness. Shine Your warm heavenly light down on me. I am in need of strength and courage. Help me to be gentle with myself whenever I regress. Give me courage and strength to move forward in my perfect way. Guide me to find peace, happiness, and contentment in myself and in life. Amen.

Prayer For Depression To Lift

O Lord God, Life has become such a struggle and I find that my faith in You is being seriously challenged – but Lord I know that Your Word says that You are there for me all the time and that You would never leave me to struggle alone. Please help me to turn my thoughts to You every single time this black depression tries to descend upon me and bring to mind those Scripture that tell the truth of Your love and grace.

Be with me Lord at those times when doubts of Your love for me rise up in my mind – and help me to reaffirm in my heart all that You have done for me, throughout my life. When my faith is threatened by those negative thoughts that say that You could never love me – let me remember that You loved me so much that You died to save me and have clothed me in Your perfect righteousness.

When assurance in my salvation and eternal security starts to waver– help me to recall that You loved me so much that You sent Your only begotten Son to die for me and pay the price for all my sins – for which I thank You Lord, and help me to reaffirm the truth in my heart.

When I find myself wandering far from You and little murmurings rise in my heart…that You cant love me as much as other people because things are so difficult in my life – prevent me from dwelling on such lies – for You alone are good and gracious and faithful and true.

And Lord when depression is set to invade my peace help me to claim the promise that Your grace is sufficient for me and trust You in all things – thank You Lord in Jesus name I pray,

Amen

“The Lord is my strength and my shield. My heart has trusted in him and I am helped. He is not only with me but in me, and I in Him.”

Prayers for My Spouse Who Lives with Depression

God, in Your mercy, hear my prayer. My spouse (or significant other) lives with depression, and I don’t know what to do. I feel powerless and inadequate to help. This is frustrating because it can be so unpredictable. Help me find the resources that I need to be with my spouse (or significant other) during these times of pain. In Christ’s name, Amen.

Prayer Against Holiday Depression

Heavenly Father, it seems so silly and wrong to get so depressed about this up-coming holiday, but Lord You know that I find holidays quite difficult to cope with, and I know that I cannot break out of this cycle of holiday depression, without Your help and strength.

Show me what I ought to do in order to prevent this holiday depression descending on me as my vacation draws closer. Teach me what to do when panicky thoughts start to fill up my mind and show me how to prevent those thoughts from taking hold of me, and pushing me back into a state of despair and depression.

Lord I know that in the Bible it says that we should, ‘take every thought captive’ and I don’t really know how to do this… but I do pray that You would help me to apply this biblical principle in my own life to my holiday depression, so that when I become aware of any feeling of despair or desperation, I will be enabled to hand it over to You, Who had promised to carry all our cares and difficulties.

Lord I pray that I may truly break free of this recurring holiday depression once and for all, and believe that in the power of the indwelling Holy Spirit I will not be bothered again by this debilitating holiday depression – This I ask in Jesus name,

Amen

Prayers for Others with Depression

Dear Holy Parent, hold all Your children who live with the mental condition of depression. Send Your love through people–therapists, pastors, friends, family, etc.–that they may be assured of Your love in their dark hours. In Your holy name, Amen.

A Prayer In Times Of Loneliness And Depression

Lord I feel so lonely at times that I am becoming more and more depressed.. when I am left on my own, with no one to talk to.. and I find that I am trying to fill my life with activities and people – which do not address the root issue of my loneliness or what I am going through.

Lord I know that You have promised to help the afflicted and set free those that are all alone in families.. I pray that You would do just that in my life – so that I may rediscover the joy of my salvation and overcome the depression that sweeps over me so often, when I find that I am on my own and have no one to talk to.

You have promised to help the afflicted and to comfort those that are hurting. Turn Your loving-kindness towards me at this time I pray, comfort my hurting soul and renew a right spirit within me – this I ask in Jesus name,

Amen

Prayer for Inner Peace

Heavenly Father, grant me peace of mind and calm my troubled heart. My soul is like a turbulent sea. I can’t seem to find my balance so I stumble and worry constantly. Give me the strength and clarity of mind to find my purpose and walk the path you’ve laid out for me. I trust your Love God, and know that you will help me out of this darkness. Just as the sun rises each day against the dark of night. Please bring me clarity with the light of God.

In your name I pray. Amen.

A Prayer for Worry

“Dear Father, I admit that I often forget that you are with me. I often forget what you’re like. Would you please forgive me for that? I need to get to know you better. I need to get to know your Word and your promises better. Help me to put you first in every area of my life. Help me to live one day at a time. Help me to not worry about tomorrow but instead focus on what you’re doing in my life right now. I want to trust in your promise to take care of every one of my needs — financial, relational, physical, social, spiritual, and emotional. Help me to trust you more and worry less. I pray in Jesus’ Name. Amen.”

Trusting God’s Good Promises

Father, even though I may not be able to see how any good can come out of these circumstances, you have promised to never stop doing good to me.

As you say in Psalm 23:6, “Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord forever.”

In Psalm 84:11 you say, “No good thing does he withhold from those who walk uprightly.”

As I lift this prayer for anxiety, I believe this promise. I believe that you will not withhold a single good thing from me. If something is good for me, you’ll give it to me. If it’s not, you’ll withhold it.

I believe that right now your goodness and mercy are pursuing me. Even though I may feel anxious, I can’t escape your goodness and mercy. You are pouring out blessings on me right now, and nothing can stop your good promises from being fulfilled.

Even though I’m currently feeling anxious, I’m choosing to put my trust in your word over my feelings. I’m choosing to believe your promises rather than what my eyes can see.

Prayer to calm anxiety

a short prayer based on Psalm 23 (NHEB)

Father God, into my racing mind bring your still small words of peace.

The LORD is my shepherd; I lack nothing…
Into my uneasy life bring your strong and steady arms.
Your rod and your staff they comfort me…
Into my quickening heart bring your shield of faith.
You lead me beside still waters, you comfort me…
Into my faint soul bring your fortress of hope.

Surely your goodness and loving kindness will follow me all the days of my life…
Thank you that I am your child.
Thank you that I can place all my trust in you, this day and forever.

Amen

A prayer for when life is desperate

(for those in despair or depression)

I feel lost.
Find me Lord, pull back the wreckage of my life so that I can breathe again.
I feel abandoned.
Embrace me Lord, cover my wounds with your healing love so that I might stand restored.
I feel trapped.
Cut the chains Lord, release me from the weights that drag me down. Come bring your freedom and hope.
I am desperate, yet I seek you God, the one who conquered the darkness,
The one who rose from death, the one who said, “follow me”!
I will follow the brightness of your love.
Even when it is all but a distant glimmer
I will fix my eyes open it.

I feel lost, yet I am found in that light.
I feel abandoned, yet you are besides me.
I feel trapped, yet you call me to freedom.
I feel desperate, yet you lead me to peace.
I draw near to you Lord Jesus.

A Prayer for Battling Depression

Dear Heavenly Father,

Thank you that you never change, even when everything around me is changing and unpredictable. (Hebrews 13:8) Thank you that you are stable, even when I feel so very unstable. (Isaiah 33:6) It feels like Satan has been whipping me around! Please sustain me, protect me, and enable me to stand. (1 John 4:4; Psalm 28:7)

I know that because sin entered the world, all of creation is under a curse–all creation groans. (Romans 8:22) Because of this, I struggle physically, emotionally and spiritually. Thank you for how my body is made, and that it sends me warning signals to tell me that I need help. Right now my brain and emotions are telling me that something isn’t right.

Help me to see if there is something physical that is causing my depression. Help me to sift through my circumstances to see if there is a need for change in some way. If I am experiencing depression as a result of a spiritual battle, please bring that to light and show me the best way to fight that battle.

Please lead me to the right source for help. Thank you for understanding what I am going through (Hebrews 4:15), and thank you that Your Word tells me that even Your Son went through hard times emotionally. There were times that He was distressed, grieved, faced loneliness, experienced deep sorrow, and after the death of John He went into isolation (Matthew 14:13). He cried in prayer (Hebrews 5:7-9), and at times he was overwhelmingly sad (Isaiah 53:3). There was even a time that he was afraid his body would not survive the anguish he felt. (Matthew 26:38)

I pray that You would send someone to  help bear my burden. (Galatians 6:2) Thank you for again reminding me of how weak I am, and for the body of Christ that you have provided to help bear burdens when we grow too weary to bear them alone. I need someone to come along side me, take my arms, wrap them around their neck, and help me walk until I am strong enough to walk on my own. (Ecclesiastes 4:9)

Thank you for the grace that you have provided. (Hebrews 4:16)  I pray You will use this difficult time to cause me to go deeper in my relationship with You, and that You would get the glory for anything that is produced in me. (James 1)

Thank you for how you are going to use this time in my life and for all you are doing through this depression. Thank you that You have allowed my weakness to manifest itself in the form of depression, so that You can work more of Your image into my life. (Galatians 2:20; Galatians 4:19)

Thank you that I am not defined by this weakness.  Since I am Your child, I am defined by what You accomplished on the cross. Because of Christ’s death on the cross, I can wake up every morning and live life knowing that no matter what I do, think, say, or feel–the cross covers it. Because You offered up Your own beloved Son, I can have peace with You and can face each day with fresh hope and grace.  Help me to focus on what is true, and not focus on how I feel. As I sit before the cross, help me to gain a new appreciation for what it actually means for me on a daily basis.

Help me to embrace my weakness as a gift. Remind me that my weakness allows You to work through me even when I am so very weak and feel as though I can do nothing. (2 Corinthians 12:9) Through this time, I pray that you would enlarged my heart that I might love and obey You, and love others more deeply. (Psalm 119:32; Galatians 6:2; 2 Corinthians 1:3-4)
Amen

Prayer for worry and anxiety

Father God,

Sometimes I feel I can not face tomorrow, it is hard to keep going with such anxious thoughts running through my mind.
I ask for your peace to flood my being, that each moment I would surrender these worries, fears and anxieties to you.
I ask for your presence to walk with me through each part of my day, that I would not feel alone but know that I am loved.
And I ask for your strength to wake me each morning and keep me going. May I trust in you to see me through, lead me to calmer seas, balance and rest in heart, mind, body and soul.

You are all I need.

Amen.

Trusting God’s Good Character

Father, I don’t understand why you’re allowing me to go through these challenging circumstances. I don’t know why you’ve allowed me to be pressed on every side and overwhelmed by the waves of life.

But what I do know is that you are good and loving and faithful. I know that nothing can get to me without first going through you. And I know that you are working all things together for my good and your glory.

As it says in Romans 8:28, “And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose.”

So even though I may not understand why I’m experiencing these difficult trials, I know that you are walking with me every step of the way. So I lift this prayer for anxiety to you. I trust in you to sustain me even when I can’t sustain myself. You are faithful even when I am faithless.

Anxiety

Anxiety

A Prayer for Relief of Stress and Anxiety

Lord Jesus, the stresses in my life often reach a dangerous proportion—or so it seems. My body, mind, and spirit struggle to keep up physically, mentally, and yes, spiritually. Some days anxiety stalks me like a deceitful predator, and the temptation to worry draws me in. I know better, but some days the challenges outweigh the truths buried inside. My trust in You fades into the background, giving fear and concerns permission to discourage me.

In those moments of apprehension, help me remember that I belong to You, and that You are not the author of fear or anxiety, but the giver of love and a sound mind. Teach me Your ways to respond to problems by giving thanks in them. Your Word assures me that You are always there with me. You are the Blessed Controller of all things, and nothing escapes Your attention in my life. You have given me every tool and spiritual blessing to fight against those things that try to steal my peace. You’ve promised that when I’m stressed and burdens are trying to weigh me down, I can come to You. You will give me sweet rest!

Whether the anxiety stems from work, parenting, finances, physical issues, or even world conditions, You are there, Lord, to shoulder the weight. Teach me to recognize the stressful trials as tools for you to shape me and rearrange me. Through those difficult times, You will teach me patience, enlarge my faith, and help me see things I couldn’t see earlier—if I will only let You. When I’m clueless as to what to do, Lord, I want to turn to you first, not last.

Forgive me for trying to handle things on my own, Lord. The need to be in control sometimes gets a stronghold on my life. That only makes things worse. I want to trust You more and see things from Your perspective, not my own. No one makes me feel uptight, angry, or stressed, and no one forces me to react negatively. I choose to respond according to my beliefs. Do I believe You are in control? Do I believe You created all things and hold all things in Your Hand? Do I believe You are truly good? When an anxious thought creeps in, help me to stop and relax, to take that thought captive, and to turn apprehension into a calm prayer for deliverance. Revamp my belief system, Lord. Show me a new way to handle life according to Your Way.

No matter what issues I am dealing with; no matter how big the problems or situations, I’m laying them all at Your feet today. Turn these potentials for stress into lessons for growth and trust. When I can’t see any possible solutions, I choose to believe that You are working things out for my good—in Your own time, as you have in the past. Show me what to do, or what not to do. As I focus on You, remembering Your promises and Your words, I believe You will fill me with a peace that is beyond all understanding.

In Your precious name,
Amen

A Prayer Against Depression

“Heavenly Father, please strengthen our hearts, and remind us to encourage one another when the troubles of life start to overwhelm us. Please guard our hearts from depression. Give us the strength up to rise up each day and fight against the struggles which seek to weigh us down. Amen.”

— John Barnett

A Short Prayer for An Anxious Heart

Dear Lord, I thank you that I can come to You always for any reason. I’m grateful that when I pray to You, You answer me. Help me to come to You at the beginning of my fears and anxieties instead of waiting until I can’t stand them anymore. The quicker I come to You the better. You want to free me from ALL my fears. Help me look to You for help more often so that I can be radiant with Your joy. In Jesus’ name, I pray, Amen.

— Jennifer Heeren

A Prayer For Escaping the Pit of Depression

“Lord, it seems as if my world has collapsed, hurling me into a deep, dark pit. I come to you in complete surrender. I am desperate for you, helpless and afraid. Please lift me out of this pit and show me the way, Lord.   In Jesus’ name, Amen”

— Mary Southerland

Trusting God’s Good Provision

Lord, in Philippians 4:19 you say, “And my God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus.”

I thank you that you are going to meet my every need. I may not be able to see how you’re going to meet my every need, but I’m choosing to believe your promise.

I thank you that you are going to supply my needs out of your bounteous riches in Christ. I don’t have to twist your arm in order to get you to meet my needs. Just as I love to provide for my children, you absolutely love to provide abundantly for your children.

So I’m asking you to provide for me, confident that you will. Confident that you will do great things in response to my prayers.

As I lift this prayer for anxiety, I remember the words of Charles Spurgeon, who said:

It does not matter how heavy troubles are if you can cast them on the Lord. The heavier they are, so much the better, for the more you have gotten rid of, and the more there is laid on the rock.

Father, I’m casting all my cares on you because I know you care for me.

Trusting God’s Fatherly Care

Lord, your word tells me that you care for me as a Father cares for his children. I am your child and I thank you that you love me with a deep, overwhelming, never ceasing, overpowering love.

As you say in Matthew 7:11, “If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask him!”

Father, even I know how to give good gifts to children, and I’m a sinful human. You are perfectly good and loving, and I thank you that you will give me good, sweet gifts. I thank you that your heart beats with Fatherly affection for me. I thank you that nothing can separate me from your intense, Fatherly love.

As it says in Romans 8:35, “Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or danger, or sword?”

Because nothing can separate me from your love, I can trust you completely. I can throw all my weight on you. I can hope in you fully. I offer this prayer for anxiety, knowing that you are my good, gracious, heavenly Father.

Trusting God To Carry Every Burden

Lord, in 1 Peter 5:6-7 you say, “Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God so that at the proper time he may exalt you, casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you.”

Father, I humbly offer this prayer for anxiety up to you, casting all my anxieties upon you. The simple truth is that I am not able to carry all these burdens on my own. I don’t have the strength or the wisdom to successfully navigate these challenging circumstances.

And so I am casting every burden, big and small upon you. I am clinging to you in the midst of the storm, holding fast to you. Though I may not be able to carry all my burdens, you absolutely can.

Oh What Needless Pain We Bear

If you’re struggling with anxiety, run to God constantly in prayer. Don’t let anxiety dominate your life. Don’t let worry rule you. Take all your worries and fears and struggles to God and lay them at his feet.

I can’t help but be reminded of the hymn, “What A Friend We Have In Jesus“:

What a privilege to carry everything to God in prayer!
O what peace we often forfeit, O what needless pain we bear,
All because we do not carry everything to God in prayer!

Don’t forfeit your peace or bear needless pain. Lift up your prayer for anxiety to God and let him bear your burdens.

For Overcoming Depression

Dear Lord, I am suffering from depression and anxiety disorder. Thank you for giving me the medical attention that has helped place my soul back into my skin. Give all of us who suffer this stress the courage and strength to trust you and allow the Holy Spirit to guide us. You love and through your love all things are possible.

In Jesus’ name we praise you.

Amen.

The Third Step Prayer

God, I offer myself to Thee …
to build with me and to do with me as Thou wilt.
Relieve me of the bondage of self,
that I may better do Thy will.
Take away my difficulties,
that victory over them may bear witness to those I would help
of Thy Power, Thy Love, and Thy Way of life.
May I do Thy will always!

The Memorare

Remember O Most gracious Virgin Mary,
that never was it known that anyone who fled to your protection,
implored your help,
or sought your intercession
was left unaided.
Inspired by this confidence,
I fly to you, O Virgin of virgins, my mother.
To you I come;
before you I stand, sinful and sorrowful.
O Mother of the Word Incarnate,
despise not my petitions,
but in your mercy, hear and answer me.
Amen.

Prayer of St. Francis of Assisi

Lord, make me an instrument of your peace.
Where there is hatred, let me sow love;
where there is injury, pardon;
where there is doubt, faith;
where there is despair, hope;
where there is darkness, light;
and where there is sadness, joy.
O Divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek?to be consoled as to console;?to be understood as to understand;?to be loved as to love.?For it is in giving that we receive;?it is in pardoning that we are pardoned;?and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life. Amen
