A Prayer for Students to Study Well

Lord, bless our students with the kind of study habits that help them do their best. Teach them how to manage their time and energy as good stewards of all You have given them. Show them how to develop their talents, to find the path You have set before them, and to be courageous and adventurous to try new things and learn new skills. Place our students in the kind of classroom atmosphere that will both challenge them and encourage them, but still be conducive to their particular abilities. Show them the importance of learning, remembering that You are always with them, leading them as they acknowledge You daily. Eliminate the distractions in their lives that keep them from excellence. Give them persistence and the desire to follow through with each assignment. When things seem difficult, provide the help they need. Help them to be excited about their studies, to be creative in their endeavors, and to remember Who and Whose they are at all times.

Prayer Before Studying #1

“O my Lord, make useful for me what you hath thought me and teach me knowledge that will be useful to me.”

O my Lord! I ask You for the understanding of the prophets and the memory of the messengers, and those nearest to You.

O my Lord! Make my tongue full of Your remembrance, and my heart with consciousness of You.

(O my Lord!) You do whatever You wish, and You are my Availer and Protector and the best of aid.

O my Lord! Nothing is easy except what You have made easy. If You wish, You can make the difficult easy.

Prayer Before Studying #2

Incomprehensible Creator, the true Fountain of light and only Author of all knowledge: deign, we beseech Thee, to enlighten our understanding, and to remove from us all darkness of sin and ignorance. Thou, who makest eloquent the tongues of those who lack utterance, direct our tongues, and pour on our lips the grace of thy blessing. Give us a diligent and obedient spirit, quickness of apprehension, capacity of retaining, and the powerful assistance of Thy holy grace; that what we hear or learn we may apply to Thy honor and the eternal salvation of our own souls. Amen.

Prayer Before Studying #3

Holy Spirit, Giver of all good gifts, enter into my mind and heart. Give me the gift of knowledge and the grace to use it wisely. Help me in all my endeavors. Give me perseverance and fortitude. Help my memory, that I may remember what I learn and recall it when necessary. Guide me in the classroom. You who are the Way, the Truth, and the Life, let me not be deceived by false teaching. Our Lady of Good Studies, pray for me. Amen.

Prayer Before Studying #4

St. Thomas Aquinas

Come, Holy Spirit, Divine Creator,
true source of light and fountain of wisdom!

Pour forth your brilliance upon my dense intellect,
dissipate the darkness which covers me,
that of sin and of ignorance.

Grant me
a penetrating mind to understand,
a retentive memory,
method and ease in learning,
the lucidity to comprehend, and
abundant grace in expressing myself.

Guide the beginning of my work,
direct its progress,
and bring it to successful completion.

This I ask through Jesus Christ,
true God and true man,
living and reigning with you
and the Father, forever and ever. Amen.

— [Translated from Fernand Lelotte, S.J., Rabboni (Paris: Casterman, 1955) by Dr. Chau T. Phan, Rider University.]

After Studying

O my Lord! I entrust You with what I have read and I have studied.

(O my Lord!) Bring it back to me when I am in need of it.

(O my Lord!) You do whatever You wish, and You are my Availer and Protector and the best of aid.

To Increase Memory

In the name of God, the Beneficent, the Merciful.
Glory be to Him who does not oppress His subject. Glory be to Him who does not chastise the people of the earth with various punishments. Glory be to Him who is kind (and) Merciful. O’ my Lord establish in my mind, light insight wisdom and knowledge; indeed You have power on everything.

For Confidence in God Prayers for College Students

Dear God, I have no idea where I am going.
I do not see the road ahead of me.
I cannot know for certain where it will end.

Nor do I really know myself…
and the fact that I think that I am following Your will does not mean that I am actually doing so.

But I believe this:
I believe that the desire to please You does in fact please You.
I hope I have that desire in everything I do.
I hope I never persist in anything apart from that desire.

And I know that if I do this, You will lead me by the right road,
though I may know nothing about it at the time.

Therefore I will trust You always,
for though I may be lost – and in the shadow of death –
I will not be afraid, because I know You will never leave me to face my troubles all alone.

— Thomas Merton

A Prayer Before a Test

Lord Jesus,
You understand the difficulties humans face,
and the pressure I’m under right now.
I ask that you guide me as I take this test,
so that I may do my best.
Open my mind,
Clear my thoughts,
Relax my mind and body,
And grant me perfect concentration,
So I may use the knowledge I have gained,
To build up your kingdom,
For the good of all. Amen

A Prayer for Guidance in the Day & Exam Ahead

Good morning, Lord! Today’s a new day, a chance for a new start. Yesterday is gone and with it any regrets, mistakes, or failures I may have experienced. It’s a good day to be glad and give thanks, and I do, Lord. Thank you for today, a new opportunity to love, give, and be all that you want me to be.

Today I want to start the day with you on my mind and in my heart. As I dress, let me wear the armor you’ve provided daily: the helmet of salvation, the breastplate of righteousness, the shield of faith, the belt of truth, the shoes of peace, and the sword of the spirit—with prayer on my tongue: praise for you and petitions for those around me and those I meet.

Feed me today with your daily bread. As the Bread of Life, your food, like manna, will sustain me throughout any trials and hungers. Help me to set my thoughts on things above and to speak only what will help and encourage others. Keep me from putting my foot in my mouth, and help me guard the affections of my heart today, Lord. Make whatever work I do be marked with excellence rather than perfectionism, as I seek not to make a name, but to make a difference. Help me to treat each person I encounter as you would, with respect and love, forgiving others and asking for forgiveness myself when needed.

As I start this day, help me remember that I belong to you, and my desire is to act accordingly. Keep my feet from stumbling and my mind from wandering into distractions that could steal precious time and energy from the most important things you have designed for me. I’m proud to be your child, Lord. And I’m so grateful that you died for me—rising again on your own new morning—so that every day could be filled with the wonder of your love, the freedom of your Spirit, and the joy of knowing you.

I know earthly life is short and fleeting, Lord. But I want to live today as if it were the first or the last day of my life, giving thanks for every good and perfect gift you choose to give. Today, and every day, I want to live my life for you, Jesus. In your precious name, Amen.

Your love surpasses all fear
I give you the anxiety I feel
I surrender all my worries to you
Clear my mind
Calm my heart
Still my Spirit
Relax my being
That I may always glorify you
In everything I write, speak and do.

Lord, I have done my best. I now lay this exam and the result at the foot of the cross.

Thank you that I travel with you and live in your blessing. Amen.

A Prayer for Final Exams

Jesus,

This is a stressful season, and I’m overwhelmed by the mountain of work ahead of me, yet I trust in you. I know that when I put my faith in you, even when it’s as small as a mustard seed (Luke 17:6), miracles can be accomplished. I pray that as I study in these coming weeks, as I soak up knowledge and memorize facts, as I read and process and write, that you would be renewing my mind and strengthening my spirit. Help me to persevere through the massive to-do lists and the busy schedules, and help me to keep my eyes fixed on you throughout it all.

As I enter my classrooms and exam rooms, I pray you would blanket me in your peace. Ease any anxieties, calm my restless mind, and give me focus on the task at hand. I pray that I would know my worth is in you alone, not in any grade I do or do not make, not in any assignment or test or teacher’s opinion. I pray that I would fear your presence during my exams, and that I would be comforted by your nearness.

Thank you for the gift of this education, Jesus. I pray that these final exams would be a celebration of all I have learned in this season, and that I would be grateful for all that I have experienced and for all the ways I have grown.

May you be glorified, Lord. Amen.
