Miscarriage, also known as spontaneous abortion and pregnancy loss, is the natural death of an embryo or fetus before it is able to survive independently. Some use the cutoff of 20 weeks of gestation, after which fetal death is known as a stillbirth.

Prayer Against Miscarriage

Dear Lord Jesus! I come to You today in sadness and sorrow, for the devil has tried your daughter twice with miscarriages! Heavenly Lord, come to my rescue, heal me, and heal my womb, that I may conceive a baby and have a safe delivery without any more miscarriages. Heavenly Lord, pls cleanse me with Your precious blood which You shed on the cross for me. Make me whole again, free from all ailments. In the Mighty Name of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Humble Virgin and Doctor of the Church,
in thirty-three years
you achieved great perfection
and became the counselor of Popes.

You know the temptations of mothers today
as well as the dangers that await unborn infants.
Intercede for me
that I may avoid miscarriage
and bring forth a healthy baby
who will become a true child of God.
Also pray for all mothers,
that they may not resort to abortion
but help bring a new life into the world.

O Saint Catherine of Siena,
God our Father enkindled the flame of holy love
in your heart as you meditated on the Passion of Jesus His Son.

My Lord, the baby is dead!

 Why, my Lord—dare I ask why? It will not hear the whisper of the wind or see the beauty of its parents’ face—it will not see the beauty of Your creation or the flame of a sunrise. Why, my Lord?

 “Why, My child—do you ask ‘why’? Well, I will tell you why.

 You see, the child lives. Instead of the wind he hears the sound of angels singing before My throne. Instead of the beauty that passes he sees everlasting Beauty—he sees My face. He was created and lived a short time so the image of his parents imprinted on his face may stand before Me as their personal intercessor. He knows secrets of heaven unknown to men on earth. He laughs with a special joy that only the innocent possess. My ways are not the ways of man. Humble Mary of Nazareth, you were chosen my God to bear within you our world’s greatest gift, the Savior of all humanity. I come to you now on behalf of (here mention name) who prays for the health and safety of the child that God has graced her to conceive.

Acceptance Prayer

Oh Lord, I have just had a miscarriage, and it is tough for me to accept what has happened. I was very excited about bringing my first child into the world. There are so many exciting things that I wanted to do for and with my child. Lift me safely in your arms and help me to accept what has happened. Lord, I remain confident in you knowing that I will see your goodness in the land of the living. In Jesus’ name, I believe and pray, Amen.

Strength Prayer

Dear God, you are my ever-present help in times of need. I come before you today in my time of need to ask you for divine strength. Be my refuge and strong tower as I heal from the miscarriage that I have just had. It is so hard to accept that I will not be seeing my baby anytime soon. When I feel down, keep reminding me that’s my baby is enjoying your presence right now. Help me to hold on to that until I come home and see him or her. In Jesus’ name, I believe and pray, Amen.

Guard My Heart Prayer

Oh Lord, I want to thank you and worship you today. Even amid my pain, I declare that you are still God, and there is none like you. You are the one that gave me this child, and you have taken it away. Guard my heart against the attacks of the enemy. He keeps telling me that the miscarriage is my fault. But Lord, I know that the enemy was behind this, and that is why I will let not my heart be troubled neither will I be afraid. Dear Lord, I may not know the pain of losing a child through a miscarriage, but I know God that it is difficult for those that are going through that right now. Some of them are very angry; they are blaming you for taking away their unborn children. Others have drifted away from their faith because they do not trust you anymore. Please be compassionate, help them deal with this challenging time the right way. Put the right people in their lives that will help them to see that you are not against them but for them. Almighty God, fill me with hope when I feel hopeless. Give me divine strength to keep on going on when I feel helpless. Lead me in the way that I should go in this motherhood journey for this miscarriage has left me confused and very discouraged. I am scared of trying to have a baby again because I keep thinking I lose it just like I’ve lost this baby. Rescue Me Prayer

Father God, I’m worn out from crying and asking you to bring back my baby that I miscarried. My eyes fail to look for you, my Father. Set me up Lord for the waters of fear and discouragement have come up to my neck. Rescue me, and do not let me sink. Answer me out of the goodness of your love. In your great mercy, show me how to deal with this pain that I carry in my heart. In Jesus’ name, I believe and pray, Amen.

Miscarriage Prayer

Father God, I come to you, knowing that you are a good Father who provides all of the needs of his children. Through faith, I cling to your words of hope and love during this dark and empty time for me. Your promises that never fail. You gave us new life through your Son, Jesus Christ, and you gave my baby life within me. Even in my baby’s death, I am confident that anything that comes my way will be for my good, according to your will. God of comfort,
you who are mother and father of us all,
hear my anguish at the loss of my child.
My heart and body are broken,
wracked with pain and grief.
Let me bring you my cries
and my confusion,
my anger and my envy,
my guilt and my sorrow,
knowing that you mourn with me,
that my tears are not wept alone.

You who call us each by name
from our mother’s womb
know the wonder of life
no matter how small,

Blessing of Parents after a Miscarriage

When a baby dies before birth, the parents may seek the prayers of the Church. A priest, deacon, or lay minister of the parish, or a member of the family may lead this blessing.

Make the sign of the cross. 

The leader begins:  Let us praise the Father of mercies, the God of all consolation. Blessed be God for ever.

All respond: Blessed be God for ever.

The leader may use these or similar words to introduce the blessing: 

For those who trust in God,
in the pain of sorrow there is consolation,
in the face of despair there is hope,
in the midst of death there is life.

(Name) and (Name), as we mourn the death of your child,
we place ourselves in the hands of God and ask strength, for healing, and for love.

Then the Scripture is read: 

Listen to the words of the book of Lamentations:

My soul is deprived of peace,
I have forgotten what happiness is;
I tell myself my future is lost,
all that I hoped for from the Lord.

But I will call this to mind,
as my reason to have hope:
The favors of the Lord are not exhausted,
his mercies are not spent;
They are renewed each morning,
so great is his faithfulness.
My portion is the Lord, says my soul;
therefore I will hope in him.
—   Lamentations 3:17-18, 21-24

The reader concludes: The Word of the Lord.

All respond: Thanks be to God.

After a time of silence, all join in the prayers of intercession.
These conclude with the Lord’s Prayer.
Then the leader may invite all to extend their hands over the parents in blessing.

Father and Creator,
in whom all life and death find meaning,

especially when we have need of your consolation.

N. and N. entrust to your care a life conceived in love.
May your blessing come upon them now.
Remove all anxiety from their minds
and strengthen this love
