Coronaviruses are a group of related RNA viruses that cause diseases in mammals and birds. In humans and birds, they cause respiratory tract infections that can range from mild to lethal. Mild illnesses in humans include some cases of the common cold (which is also caused by other viruses, predominantly rhinoviruses), while more lethal varieties can cause SARS, MERS, and COVID-19. In cows and pigs they cause diarrhea, while in mice they cause hepatitis and encephalomyelitis.

Pray for the coronavirus to stop spreading

Almighty God,

We know that everything is in Your sovereign control. We ask that You keep this novel coronavirus from continuing to spread. Give government officials the ability to safely handle people arriving from other countries. Help people decide to stay home instead of traveling or going out needlessly. Holy Spirit, remind people to wash their hands properly. And while it may be heartbreaking, comfort families as they decide to keep their distance from elderly or other high-risk family members.

Pope Francis Prayer to Mary during the COVID-19 Pandemic

O Mary, you always shine on our path as a sign of salvation and of hope. We entrust ourselves to you, Health of the Sick, who at the cross took part in Jesus’ pain, keeping your faith firm.

You, Salvation of Your People, know what we need, and we are sure you will provide so that, as in Cana of Galilee, we may return to joy and to feasting after this time of trial.

Help us, Mother of Divine Love, to conform to the will of the Father and to do as we are told by Jesus, who has taken upon himself our sufferings and carried our sorrows to lead us, through the cross, to the joy of the resurrection. Amen.

Under your protection, we seek refuge, Holy Mother of God. Do not disdain the entreaties of we who are in trial, but deliver us from every danger, O glorious and blessed Virgin. Amen.

God’s healing hand

To our brothers and sisters who have contracted and are suffering due to the Coronavirus Disease, we pray that God’s healing hand may rest upon you.

To medical doctors, nurses and the supporting staff who are in the frontline of the fight against COVID-19, may the Good Lord sustain you and inspire you to render your life-saving services with due care, love and compassion.

To all those who have lost their loved ones due to the Coronavirus outbreak, we convey our deepest sympathies.

We pray that their souls, through God’s mercy, may rest in eternal peace.

We pray that God may grant all bereaved families his consolation and strengthen their faith and hope in Jesus Christ, the Risen Lord.

Amen.

O Lord, hear our prayer.

We pray for those touched by the coronavirus, those who face sorrow, fear, illness and isolation. We ask for compassion, love, healing, and kindness. Make us a people living in your perfect love that we may drive away fear.

O Lord, hear our prayer.

We pray for wisdom and clarity for those making key decisions, for scientists, medical experts, politicians and public health officials. We pray for acts of kindness to spread in every community.
Enable us to be quick to see need and respond in gracious and loving ways. Take us through this time of trial.

O Lord, hear our prayer.

In Jesus’ name

Scripture reading:

“Cast all your anxiety on Him for He cares for you.” 1 Peter 5:7

“Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God and the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.” Philippians 4:6-7

A Coronavirus Prayer #2

God of compassion,

have mercy upon this nation and our world
in this time of fear and confusion:
we bring before you those who are suffering from the Coronavirus;
the aged and those who are most vulnerable
and for all who tend to their needs;
we pray for those who are now in isolation;
may know your comfort and company
and that those around them may truly love their neighbour
by prayer and in works of care and kindness;
we pray for health professionals, doctors, nurses and hospital support staff
as they answer their vocation under increasing pressure;
and we pray for those upon whose shoulders
the yoke of leadership rests,
that in their conversation and communication
your still small voice may be heard;
we ask this in the power of the Holy Spirit,
through the One who stretched out his hands to bless and to heal
even Jesus Christ our Lord.

A Coronavirus Prayer #3

Merciful God, hear our fervent prayer for all who suffer from the coronavirus. May those who are infected receive the proper treatment and the comfort of your healing presence. May their caregivers, families and neighbors be shielded from the onslaught of the virus. Give solace to those who grieve the loss of loved ones. Protect and guide those who strive to find a cure; that their work may conquer the disease and restore communities to wholeness and health. Help us to rise above fear. We ask all this through the intercession of Our Blessed Mother and in the name of your Son, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit, now and forever. Amen.

Coronavirus Prayers #1

A prayer for NHS staff and carers who have died as a result of COVID 19

Heavenly Father, whose loving care
extends over all things and over all time,
hear our prayer for those
who have dedicated their lives to the service and care of others
especially those of the NHS, caring professions and emergency services
who, by tending those infected with the COVID virus
have themselves fallen prone to the disease and died.
Receive our sorrow, penitence and gratitude;
comfort those who mourn;
strengthen, guide and protect those
who continue to care for those who are sick and in need,
as we commend the departed to your loving and eternal care;
we make our prayer through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen.

A prayer in lockdown

The doors of the house where the disciples had met were locked. (John 20.19)

Ever present God,
be with us in our isolation,
be close to us in our distancing,
be healing in our sickness,
be joy in our sadness,
be light in our darkness,
be wisdom in our confusion,
be all that is familiar when all is unfamiliar,
that when the doors reopen
we may with the zeal of Pentecost
inhabit our communities
and speak of your goodness
to an emerging world.
For Jesus’ sake.
Amen.

General Prayer for this time

Keep us, good Lord,
under the shadow of your mercy
in this time of uncertainty and distress.
Sustain and support the anxious and fearful,
and lift up all who are brought low;
that we may rejoice in your comfort
knowing that nothing can separate us from your love
in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Amen.

Lord Jesus Christ,
you taught us to love our neighbour,
and to care for those in need
as if we were caring for you.
In this time of anxiety, give us strength
to comfort the fearful, to tend the sick,
and to assure the isolated
of our love, and your love,
for your name’s sake.
Amen.

God of compassion,
be close to those who are ill, afraid or in isolation.
In their loneliness, be their consolation;
in their anxiety, be their hope;
in their darkness, be their light;
through him who suffered alone on the cross,
but reigns with you in glory,
Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen.

For hospital staff and medical researchers

Gracious God,
give skill, sympathy and resilience
to all who are caring for the sick,
and your wisdom to those searching for a cure.
Strengthen them with your Spirit,
that through their work many will be restored to health;
through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen.

From one who is ill or isolated

O God,
help me to trust you,
help me to know that you are with me,
help me to believe that nothing can separate me
from your love
revealed in Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen.

For the Christian community

We are not people of fear:
we are people of courage.
We are not people who protect our own safety:
we are people who protect our neighbours’ safety.
We are not people of greed:
we are people of generosity.
We are your people God,
giving and loving,
wherever we are,
whatever it costs
For as long as it takes
wherever you call us.

— Barbara Glasson, President of the Methodist Conference

A prayer for the world

God of love and hope,
you made the world and care for all creation,
but the world feels strange right now.
The news is full of stories about Coronavirus.
Some people are worried that they might get ill.
Others are anxious for their family and friends.
Be with them and help them to find peace.
We pray for the doctors and nurses and scientists,
and all who are working to discover the right medicines
to help those who are ill.
Thank you that even in these anxious times,
you are with us.
Help us to put our trust in you and keep us safe.
Amen.

Coronavirus Prayers #2

Pray for people who are infected with COVID-19 or facing quarantine.

Jesus, during Your ministry on earth, You showed Your power and caring by healing people of all ages
and stations of life from physical, mental, and spiritual ailments. Be present now to people who need Your
loving touch because of COVID-19. May they feel Your power of healing through the care of doctors and
nurses. Take away the fear, anxiety, and feelings of isolation from people receiving treatment or under
quarantine. Give them a sense of purpose in pursuing health and protecting others from exposure to the
disease. Protect their families and friends and bring peace to all who love them.

Pray for protection for people at higher risk of developing the disease.

Dear Lord, we lift to You our concern for people who are more likely than others to become severely
ill from COVID-19 — the elderly and people with chronic health conditions. Protect them from harm and be
their comfort in this time of uncertainty and, for many, preventive isolation from loved ones.

Pray for medical professionals, caregivers, and researchers.

God, as more people get sick, healthcare workers and first responders are working longer hours with
fewer supplies and with more risk of contracting the new coronavirus themselves. Renew their energy and
sustain them on long shifts. Bring Your protection upon them as they work with patients. Multiply their
supplies so they have the protective items needed to stay safe on the job. Inspire and invigorate the research
doctors developing better tests to diagnose the virus, create vaccines to prevent it, and identify protocols to
eliminate the disease’s spread.

Pray for leaders responsible for making decisions about the new coronavirus.

Father, we seek Your wisdom daily. Be with people making decisions that affect the lives and futures
of our families, communities, countries, and the wider world. We pray that they communicate clearly, truthfully,
and calmly — with each other and with the public — and that their messages are received and heeded. May
truth and empathy be the touchstones of people setting policies for our protection.

Pray for families adjusting to new ways of life.

Holy Spirit, as families adjust to everyone being home as businesses and schools close, we ask that You
guide people in their new realities. Give spouses grace for each other. Prompt worn-out parents to speak
words of kindness and encouragement to their children. Help children find creative ways to experience the
beauty of all You have created and continue learning.

Pray for business owners and families facing financial stress.

Jesus, we thank You for Your faithfulness in how you have guided and equipped people in their jobs
and have provided in the past. It can be scary and overwhelming not knowing how bills and obligations will
be met or to not be able to provide for families. As people feel financial strain during the uncertainty, bring
them comfort and peace, reminding them that You are there for them. Provide for them in their times of need.

Praying during the coronavirus crisis

For this reason, ever since I have heard about your faith in the Lord Jesus and your love for all God’s people. I have not stopped giving thanks for you remembering you in my prayers. I keep asking that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ the glorious Father, may give you the Spirit of wisdom and revelation, so that you may know Him better. –  Ephesians 1: 15-17

Gracious Lord, we thank you for people who love us. Who have cared for us and been there for us (we take a few seconds of silence to picture them.)
Thank you for their advice, their kindness and their prayers.

We thank you for your love for us that you have no favourites but you constantly love us fully and unreservedly. Help us to love others in your name.

Lord in this time of change and uncertainty, grant us wisdom and revelation. That we may make good decisions for ourselves and for others.

In Jesus’ name
Amen

A Prayer for Our Doctors

May the wellspring of compassion be opened to you.
May the soothing words find a home in you.
May tenderness bless you as you reach out for comfort in body, mind and spirit.
In the midst of fear or frustration, may courage be given you.
May patience keep a vigil with you and peace of mind call you.
May your heart find a song to sing even when you are weary.
May abundant love lift you and gratitude bless you as you live the mission of care entrusted to you.

Prayer of a health worker

Lord, we pray for those who need ongoing medical treatment who are forced to wait at this time.

God, please watch over their health and help them to stay positive and patient.

We pray that we overcome this global crisis and that after this pandemic, we build a more just and humane world.

Amen.

The Frontliners

Dear Heroes of the front lines, indeed.
Offering your service to those in need.
In you a weariness that begs for relief.
From the agony of such incredible grief.

Dear Front line Heroes behind the mask
Committed to such a heart wrenching task
Relentlessly you work to serve
With hope to see that declining curve.

Tears of sorrow fill your eyes
For some may live and many will die
So afraid of what cannot be seen
And well beyond a horrific dream

Like soldiers, you have held your ground
Believing a cure would soon be found
Front line heroes, brave to the last
Keep faith in your Lord for this too will pass.

Retreat not from hope, do not despair
For surely God is always near
Know that all things are in His plan
We may not always understand.

And if Angels resided on earth, abound
As you, on the front line they would be found
Dear Front liners, know this to be true
Gods’ Mercy is present in all that you do.

A Prayer for COVID-19

Lord, we pray for all who suffer from the coronavirus.
May those who are infected receive the proper treatment
and the comfort of your healing presence.
May our caregivers, families and neighbors be shielded
from the onslaught of the virus.
Give solace to those who grieve the loss of loved ones.
Protect and guide those who strive to find a cure,
that our work may conquer the disease and restore communities to wholeness and health.

The light of God surrounds us,
the love of God enfolds us,
the power of God protects us,
the presence of God watches over us.

Wherever we are, God is. And where
God is, all will be well, and all manner of things shall be well.

A Prayer for Those Who Are Ill with Coronavirus

Father God,

You are the ultimate Healer. Father, we come before You to pray for those infected with this virus. We pray for not only their healing but for them to be comforted while they heal. Lord, please eradicate every ounce of this virus from their bodies. Please heal every cell in their bodies, every infected part of their being. We pray for no lasting effects in their bodies from this illness. Father, please heal them inside and out and provide them with the medical care they need, with the medications they need, and with the healing not only physically but spiritually so that they may live life and life abundantly ahead.

In Jesus’ name, Amen

A Prayer for Those Who Are Worried about the Spread of the Coronavirus

Father,

Worry and fear are not of Your heart. 1 John 4 reminds us that perfect love casts out all fear, and we pray Your perfect love upon the hearts of all those who are burdened with the fear of this virus. Lord, we know with no doubt that You are bigger than the threat of anything, especially illnesses. Please comfort those who are living in fear, please free them from the bondage that anxiety creates within. Remind them that You are still on the Throne and that You are still in control. Fully rain down the serenity that comes only from the Prince of Peace. Help those who are living in unease to trust You in this time so that in times to come we may rest assured that You will be faithful to be with us until the end of the age. We rest at the Throne of the Almighty such fears and cast them upon You (1 Peter 5:7), for Your burden is Light and Your Yoke is easy (Matthew 11:30), we know You cover us with Your wings (Psalm 91:4).

In Jesus’ name, Amen

A Prayer for Those Treating the Sick

Father,

We come to pray for those who are caring for the sick. It takes a kind and selfless heart to care for those who are sick, and so Father we pray for them. We pray that You would be their source of rest, their source of replenishment when weary, and their source of hope in such overwhelming times. Lord we know in Luke 6:38 that whosoever pours out shall be given back in proportion, so we pray blessings upon these caregivers. We also pray for their health that they may not fall ill. Father protect them with a hedge of protection against the germs of coronavirus and help those who are giving to be protected as they nurse others back to health. Bless them, oh Lord.

In Jesus’ name, Amen

Prayers for healing of the Coronavirus

Our Father, we trustingly pray to you, asking
that the coronavirus may do no more harm,
that the epidemic may be swiftly gotten under control,
and that you restore the health of those affected
and peace to the places where the virus has arrived.
Welcome into your kingdom
the people who have died from this illness,
and comfort their families.
Sustain and protect the healthcare personnel who are fighting it,
and inspire and bless those working to control it.
Lord Jesus, doctor of our bodies and souls,
we feel impotent
in the face of this international health emergency,
but we trust in You.
Give us peace and health.
Mother Mary, protect us and continue to take care of us,
and lead us through your love to your Son, Jesus.
Amen.

Prayers during the coronavirus pandemic #1

God of grace,
we turn to you in prayer in this difficult time
in which the spread of a pandemic infection has forced our governments
restrictive measures that limit the normal course of life,
they block our sociality and risk making us shut up in our increasingly small sphere,
but they are necessary.

God of love,
help us to maintain community bonds and solidarity with our sisters and brothers,
especially with those who are in sickness and need,
and help us to be a family for those who are without a family.

God of healing,
we pray for those who have been infected and for their family members,
give them the courage to face this moment of illness;
we pray for all healthcare workers who are spending so much
to manage this epidemic competently and generously,
for scientists who are working hard on a cure in a short time;
give them all strength and vision to face and try to stop this epidemic.

God of mercy,
allow us to live this time as a profitable opportunity to reflect on our experience of faith
and on our being part of an easy society prey to fear and discouragement in the face of adversity;
help us, despite the difficulties of this situation, to keep us united and open to others,
help us not forgetting all the other great tragedies that undermine peace and disrupt the world.

God of salvation,
we pray you to support us in fighting the chains of exploitation and injustice
and help us to maintain chains of solidarity throughout Europe;
please don’t abandon us to the fear of contagion,
but even more to the contagion of fear
for Christ Jesus our brother and savior.
Amen

Prayers during the coronavirus pandemic #3

An intercessory prayer

You call us to speak to you in prayer– even when the places we would usually go to are not available.
Help us to know you Spirit’s presence wherever we pray.
Today we especially pray for those who are living in fear – give them your strength.
For those who have not yet realised the urgency of the situation – protect them, and all of us from harm.
Today I especially want to pray for …….
In the name of Jesus. Amen

“As we deal with the practicalities of protecting people from coronavirus we continue to remember Our Calling to care for the other whilst always being mindful that is that our call is always to respond to the good news in Jesus. We are a people of hope we need to declare and model good news in these difficult times.”

Revd Paul Wood, Interim Director of the Ministries Team

“Our Calling is to respond in love and service to the needs of our communities. We are grateful to our sisters and brothers around the world who hold us in prayer as we hold them. We should not be afraid “For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.” 2 Timothy 1:7.

A Prayer Amid an Epidemic

Jesus Christ, you traveled through towns and villages “curing every disease and illness.” At your command, the sick were made well. Come to our aid now, in the midst of the global spread of the coronavirus, that we may experience your healing love.

Heal those who are sick with the virus. May they regain their strength and health through quality medical care.

Heal us from our fear, which prevents nations from working together and neighbors from helping one another.

Heal us from our pride, which can make us claim invulnerability to a disease that knows no borders.

Jesus Christ, healer of all, stay by our side in this time of uncertainty and sorrow.

Be with those who have died from the virus. May they be at rest with you in your eternal peace.

Be with the families of those who are sick or have died. As they worry and grieve, defend them from illness and despair. May they know your peace.

Be with the doctors, nurses, researchers and all medical professionals who seek to heal and help those affected and who put themselves at risk in the process. May they know your protection and peace.

Be with the leaders of all nations. Give them the foresight to act with charity and true concern for the well-being of the people they are meant to serve. Give them the wisdom to invest in long-term solutions that will help prepare for or prevent future outbreaks. May they know your peace, as they work together to achieve it on earth.

Whether we are home or abroad, surrounded by many people suffering from this illness or only a few, Jesus Christ, stay with us as we endure and mourn, persist and prepare. In place of our anxiety, give us your peace. Jesus Christ, heal us.

A Daily Meditation During COVID-19

Take a moment to settle. Take a deep breath. Get comfortable. Like a rock settling on the bottom of a lake after it’s thrown in, let yourself settle.

  1. Acknowledge how you are feeling in this moment. If being calm is hard, acknowledge it. If you find yourself frustrated or stressed, acknowledge it. God wants to be present in all parts of our lives—not just the easy or serene moments.
  2. Ask for light and insight as you prepare to review your day. For some that light may come in the form of a sense of the Divine. For others it’s from a deep sense of your true self.
  3. Take a moment to think about how COVID-19 has impacted your life. Even as we are being asked to distance ourselves from one another socially, ask yourself what connections you find yourself grateful for? Who makes you feel grounded and connected to God?
  4. Public health issues have a way of making us recognize how interwoven our lives are with others in society. It can help us realize who we may often choose not to see or connect with. Is there a person or group of people especially affected by COVID-19 that you don’t often choose to see or connect with normally? What connections to others are you becoming more aware of? Who do you normally choose to reach out and connect to? Who do you avoid or refuse to see? If you can, picture the faces of these people. What connections do you take for granted in your life? What connections impact you the most?
  5. Note the emotions you feel when you think of these individuals without judging or overanalyzing. Simply acknowledge them, pay attention, and listen to where God may be speaking.
  6. As you think of the ways we are connected or disconnected to one another, pick a connection (or lack thereof) that seems important, significant, or is manifesting itself the strongest. Pause and reflect on where you’re being invited to grow from that moment. If you are a person of faith, take a moment to pray with it.
  7. God gifted us with limitless creativity and imagination. Even in this time of separation and possible isolation, what is one way you can maintain meaningful connection to others—whether directly, through technology, or intentional focus and attention?

Take a deep breath and moment of quiet. When you are ready, return to your day.
