Pregnancy, also known as gestation, is the time during which one or more offspring develops inside a woman. A multiple pregnancy involves more than one offspring, such as with twins. Pregnancy usually occurs by sexual intercourse, but can also occur through assisted reproductive technology procedures. A pregnancy may end in a live birth, a spontaneous miscarriage, an induced abortion, or a stillbirth. Childbirth typically occurs around 40 weeks from the start of the last menstrual period (LMP). This is just over nine months (gestational age)—where each month averages 31 days. When using fertilization age it is about 38 weeks.

Pregnancy Prayer
Father God, thank you for this day, your holy presence, and this new baby growing within me. Thank you for who you are – a loving, good, and trustworthy God. Oh God, thank you for being in control, and for the wonderful plan you have for our lives (Jeremiah 29:11). You are so good!
Thank you for choosing this baby to be my child, and me to be its mother. I know this is no accident (Psalm 139:13-16)!
I pray that this pregnancy would increase my faith and that my walk with you would grow even deeper. Lord, above all I want to draw closer to you and to please you (Hebrews 11:6). Help my unbelief.
God, there are so many thoughts swirling around in my mind, it’s hard to stay focused on you and what’s most important (Luke 10:41-42). However, in your word you say that if I lack wisdom and ask for it, you will give generously without thinking less of me (James 1:5).
Lord, I pray for wisdom with these new and unfamiliar circumstances I’m navigating through during this pregnancy. God please help me to choose the right people to be around me during this time. Help me to find the right advisors, and sift through all the noise (Proverbs 24:6).
I pray for courage to make hard decisions, and the ability to rest in your perfect peace knowing that, in your strength, I am doing my best (Isaiah 41:10). Thank you for being my peace in the storm (Mark 4:39) and my purpose in life. I love you, Lord.
I pray all these things in your son’s name, amen.

A Prayer for Pregnant Women
God of Infinite Goodness, watch over expectant mothers as they await the birth of their child.
Grant these women confidence and strength to dispel their anxiety and fear. Bless them with the courage and faith of Mary, always listening to your will and trusting in your loving care. As they prepare to bring new life into the world, grace them with good health and great joy. We look to you and your Son, Jesus Christ, as a sign of mercy and joy. We ask this through the intercession of Our Lady of Lourdes in the name of your Son, Jesus and the Holy Spirit, now and forever. AMEN.
Prayers for Pregnancy
The Gift of Life
After all, God is the one who gave life to each of us before we were born (Job 31:15, CEV).
God, thank you for giving each one of us life. Thank you for knitting us together in our mother’s wombs even before she knew we existed. Thank you for giving us a purpose for every beat of our hearts and every breath we take. It is in you that we live and move and have our being (Acts 17:28) and we praise you for your good and beautiful works. We are not here by accident, and we thank you that this new, budding life is not an accident either. You are a gracious and generous giver of good things, Lord! This new life is in your hands, and we pray that we would be a good steward of this precious creation. In your name we pray, amen.

Commissioned by Heaven
“Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart; I appointed you as a prophet to the nations” (Jeremiah 1:5 NIV).
God, thank you for giving my baby a hope and a future. No matter what her life holds both in my womb and in the world, I give you praise for her presence and purpose. Thank you for knowing her intimately, loving her deeply, and entrusting her to my care. Give me strength as I carry her. Equip my body to do this good work of preparing her little life for birth. Thank you for making this baby specifically and carefully and wonderfully. May her life be for your glory and may you be praised through this pregnancy, Jesus! Amen.

Formed by the Lord in the Womb
This is what the Lord says—your Redeemer, who formed you in the womb: I am the Lord, the Maker of all things, who stretches out the heavens, who spreads out the earth by myself (Isaiah 44:24 NIV).
God, you see my baby in my womb. You know her every detail, every muscle, every bone, every bit of her beautiful body, mind, heart, and soul. No matter how she is formed, she is beautiful and she is beloved by you. Grant me peace throughout this pregnancy, that I would surrender every worry or fear to you. May I take heart, knowing you have overcome the world and made a way for us to be near to you in heaven someday and on earth here now. No matter what comes, be near, Jesus. Bring comfort and peace, bring blessed assurance. In your name, amen.

Taught of the Lord
I will teach all your children, and they will enjoy great peace (Isaiah 54:13 NLT).
But you desire honesty from the womb, teaching me wisdom even there (Psalm 51:6 NLT).
God, thank you for being our teacher. Thank you for imparting your perfect wisdom onto us even from our very first moments. You are equipping us with the knowledge we need and giving us talents and abilities we can use to build your kingdom and serve you. I cannot wait to see how this baby will impact this world for your glory, Lord! Amen.

Filled with the Holy Spirit
At the sound of Mary’s greeting, Elizabeth’s child leaped within her, and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit (Luke 1:41 NLT).
Lord, because I know you and love you, this baby will come to know you and I pray they come to love you too. As you are present with me, be present with my baby in my womb. Cover her with your love and grace. Comfort her and bring her peace. Strengthen her and grow her. Create in her a heart that will long for closeness with you every day of her life. In your name I pray, amen.

Sheltered with His Wings
Those who live in the shelter of the Most High will find rest in the shadow of the Almighty. This I declare about the Lord: he alone is my refuge, my place of safety; he is my God, and I trust him. For he will rescue you from every trap and protect you from deadly disease. He will cover you with his feathers. He will shelter you with his wings. His faithful promises are your armor and protection (Psalm 91:1-4 NLT).
Lord Jesus, thank you for your protection over my life and my baby’s life. Thank you for keeping her safe and secure in my body and in your love. Thank you for strengthening her, keeping her healthy, and preparing her for the plans you have set before her. For as long as this pregnancy lasts, I pray that you will be doing the mighty and marvelous work that only you can do, creating life and bringing beauty into the world through your creations. We give you all glory, honor, and praise for this life, Jesus. Amen.

Prayers For Your Pregnancy
A prayer to keep eyes on God during pregnancy
Heavenly Father, it is Your Spirit that gives life and peace. I ask for forgiveness, for all the times I have not turned to You, in Your Word and prayer. There are times I have let my fleshy desires and emotions govern my mind or have set my mind on earthly things such as distractions and circumstances. I need Your help with this, Lord. I pray to continually seek You, first, above all, even when I am stressed or not feeling well. May my eyes never lose sight of Your love and power in my life. Thank You for always being there, no matter how far I have strayed. May I run with endurance the race set before me, as my thoughts are on You. Amen.
A prayer for help trusting God through pregnancy
Heavenly Father, it is You who are faithful, giving us great hope to hold on to. Thank You for Your written Word as it is filled with first-hand accounts of Your faithfulness. Yes, You are altogether trustworthy! Help me to remember this and that You are my strength and shield. Please, forgive me for not always trusting You with my pregnancy, and for fretting about things outside of my control. I confess to sometimes putting my trust into my own power or into man, but it is Your plan that never fails! May I be led to know You more fully, Father, that I can trust You always, even on the hardest of days. Please, help me to trust with all my heart, and not lean on my own understanding, but give this pregnancy completely to You. Amen.
A prayer to be Spirit-led
Heavenly Father, it is Your Spirit that fills me with peace, joy, love, gentleness, and self-control. All things I am needing during this pregnancy. Please, help me as I lay down my own life, to be filled with Yours. And forgive me for not always doing so, for Your Word says the flesh is opposed to the Spirit of God. Yes, help me to walk in obedience, picking up my cross, as I submit to You. It is I who must decrease that Your Spirit may increase! Please, help me to get out of my own way and convict me when I am walking outside of Your design for my life. It is only through You who gives me strength that I can do all things. Amen.

Praying Through Your Pregnancy #1
Pregnancy Prayers for the First Trimester
First prayer
Dear Heavenly Father, Thank you for the child You are giving me. Thank you for this awesome miracle of new life. You are the only one who knows if I am having a boy or a girl, and whichever it is, I ask You to bless my baby with good health and with love. Lord, please help me feel well physically, and take away any morning sickness or other hardships that may make it hard for me to concentrate on You and this gift You are giving me. I pray against miscarriage, Jesus. I know how common it is, but I know You want me to have a healthy baby, and so I claim a healthy pregnancy, in Jesus’ name. I know love is the most important gift I can give my baby, so help me to be the most loving mother I can be. Father God, I want to be an extension of Your love. Use me to bring Your love into my child’s life. Anoint me to teach my child how to pray. Help me teach my child Your ways and Your Word. Help me to be a good role model. And again, I praise You for this wonderful miracle of life that’s growing inside me. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.
Baby’s brain
Dear Lord, I pray for my baby’s brain development. I pray that my baby will develop a healthy, intelligent brain. I pray now that this baby will grow normally, just as it is supposed to, according to Your plan for pregnancy. I pray that the cells will multiply and grow and that the brain and spinal cord will develop properly. Give my baby a strong spinal cord and a strong, intelligent mind. And because Your Word says, “Whatever you ask in My name, I will do” (John 14:13), I am obeying Your Word by asking You to bless my baby’s growth and make my baby healthy and strong. I also ask that You will bless my baby with an excellent memory. Lord, help me teach my baby to memorize Scriptures, and help my baby to memorize them easily and quickly. I pray that Bible verses will come to his or her memory quickly in times of need. I thank You for Your promise of giving us peace, so I don’t have to worry about something being wrong with my baby. I declare the power of Your Word and Your Holy Spirit to come to pass. May my baby’s brain develop just as it should, and may my child be blessed with a high IQ, to be used for Your glory. And, Lord, I pray that my son or daughter will grow up to be a person of prayer – that he or she will have faith and tap into Your power through prayer. I pray in the name of the Father God, Jesus Christ, and in the Holy Spirit. Amen.
Baby’s heart
Father God, I thank You for my baby’s heartbeat, and even though I can’t hear it yet, I know You can. Bless my baby’s heart and cause it to grow strong, just as it should be. Protect my baby’s heart from any defects or problems. Your Word says that in the beginning Your creative powers were at work. I acknowledge Your power and ask You to extend it to my baby also. Create a healthy baby, week by week, as he or she grows. And, Lord, give my child a heart to love and serve You. Give my child a tender heart, open to hearing Your voice, and to be kind and compassionate toward others. Please help me to be a good role model of these attitudes as well. Help me lead my child in prayer and in opening up our hearts to You to receive Your love. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.
Baby’s hands, feet, fingers, and toes
Dear Lord, I pray for my baby’s hands and fingers, feet and toes, that they will grow and develop properly. I pray for the elbows and wrists that are developing as well, they they will be good and strong and flex as they should. Please bless my baby’s hands and use them for the good of Your kingdom. Bless my baby’s feet and help my child to always walk with You, God. Lord, thank You for blessing each one of us with special gifts and talents. I pray that whatever my child does with his or her hands, he or she will do it well and use it for the ministry. Bless the work of my child’s hands. Help him to be diligent in his work so he may be viewed to have godly character. And, Lord, bless my child’s feet that they might go where You want them to go, for Your ministry. I know that every good and perfect gift comes from above, and I acknowledge You as our Creator and God. I praise You for all You have done and for all You will do. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
Pregnancy Prayers for the Second Trimester
Baby’s legacy
Dear Lord, I thank You for making it to the second trimester this week! I praise You for the miracle of this baby I’m carrying. Truly, You are a great and wonderful Thank you for caring for my unborn baby, as You said in so many verses. Lord, I pray for my child that he or she will exhibit the fruit of the Holy Spirit: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. Help me to be a role model of these. Lord, I want to live in my life in harmony with You, so that I bring Your Spirit into our home and into my child’s life. Help me be the loving mother You want me to be. And, Lord, I also pray for the physical development of my baby. Please cause everything that is happening this week to develop properly. Psalm 139:13 says, “You created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb”. I thank You for this encouraging Scripture. Please knit together – cause to develop properly – every part of my baby’s being: body, soul, and spirit. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
Baby’s voice
Dear Lord, I pray for my baby’s vocal cord development -– that his voice will develop properly. Help his mouth, throat, larynx and windpipe to form as they should. And, Lord, I pray that my child will grow up to be a person who is known for speaking words of life. Help my child to speak only positive, encouraging, and uplifting words, and to avoid gossip and criticism. Help me, too, so that I can be a good role model for godly speech. Please help me when I’m having a hard day, when I’m tired or when I’m angry, because I don’t want to say things I’ll regret later. Help me to hold my tongue. Thank you, Lord, that we can call on You for help. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
Baby’s eyes
Father God, I thank You for giving us spiritual insight through Your Word. I pray that my baby will grow to have sharp spiritual vision. May he experience Your calling on his life at an early age. Open the eyes of his heart and enlighten his mind with Your Word. Fill his life with the glorious riches that are the inheritance of Your people. As his mother, I stand for him in prayer and claim the promises in the Bible for him. And, Lord, I pray for my baby’s eyes that they will open and see this week or sometime very soon, according to what is right for his development. Please give my child perfect vision. If there is anything that threatens my baby’s sight, I ask You to heal him right now and create a perfect retina, optic nerve, and perfect interpretation of the image displayed in his brain. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
Pregnancy Prayers for the Third Trimester
Baby’s Ears and Hearing
Dear Lord, I pray for my baby’s hearing that is developing now. Give him or her perfect hearing with the ears and inner parts of the ear working properly. But, Lord, I also pray that my child will hear and recognize Your voice. Give him spiritual ears to hear what You say to his generation, and to him specifically. I pray that my child will love Your voice and be sensitive to it. Lord, You say in the book of John that Your people hear You and follow You, and that You give them eternal life. I pray now for my child’s salvation, that You would give him a wonderful experience in knowing You are his personal Lord and Savior and that You have prepared eternal life for him. Lord, I also pray that my words express love and are positive, encouraging, life-giving and Bible-based. I pray that my baby hears only good things coming out of my mouth, and I pray that I will think about what I am going to say before I say it. Help me teach by words and action to speak praise. Show him the path in which You want him to go and help him to spread the Good News of Jesus Christ wherever he goes. Thank you, Jesus, for hearing my prayer. I ask this in Your name. Amen.
Preparing for labor
Dear Lord, I pray for my baby this week. I pray that You will turn my baby’s head down in the direction You want him to be. If for some reason the baby shouldn’t turn, such as if the cord is wrapped around his neck, then I pray that You take care of this situation, too.
God, You are Almighty and know everything that is going on with my body and my baby. You know the exact minute my baby will be born. Please help me to be patient and get through this time of waiting. I am so anxious to see and hold my baby that I can barely wait another day. Please be close to me and my baby and surround me with Your love and presence at the birth. Help the labor go smoothly and the birth to go just right.
I know that in Nehemiah it says that Your gracious hand is upon me. I know You will bless this delivery, Lord. I know that my labor will be manageable and You will be with me the whole time. Please take away any fear that I may have, and help this baby to come quickly and safely.
You are a great and powerful God. I know that if I praise You, You will rain down Your blessings from above. I believe that You are the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End. This is a new beginning for my baby, for our family. We praise You for this wonderful gift. Thank you. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

Please bring the right people to help me deliver this baby. Please let me have this baby in the way I wish, and in the way that’s best for my child, whether natural or C-section. Praying Through Your Pregnancy #3
My First Prayer
(When we found out that we were expecting)
Father thank you for the incredible opportunity to be with child. It’s something that I truly cherish as a gift given to me and my family and we are so very grateful. Thank you for allowing my body to function as you have created it to, and for the miracle of new life growing inside of me. Mind-blowing! Lord you already know who this child is- whether boy or girl, and what they are destined to become. How thrilling to be co-partnering on this journey with you! I pray for the life of this child, that in the next few months which are most delicate, you will cause this child to develop just as they should according to Psalm 139. I claim a healthy pregnancy, in Jesus’ name. Lord, becoming a parent is no simple or easy responsibility, and my prayer is that you will fill us with absolute joy. As you have gifted this child to us, please help us to be good stewards over this child’s life, to dedicate this child to you, and to never forget that you have a great plan for them. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Baby’s Purpose and Destiny
Father thank you for this child that is growing inside of me. Before this child was conceived, you knew them by name. You have called this child forth, given him/her/them a heartbeat and set him/her/them to be your image and light bearers in this broken and dark world. As parents, Lord help us to not be selfish with this gift, but to freely give him/her/them over to you. You have a destiny for this child and I know that the enemy will want to come against everything that you have planned. May your will prevail. Lord I come against any and every destructive force and plan of the enemy to prevent this child from reaching him/her/their full potential in you. May we raise them to be focused upon what you want them to be, and most importantly to have a heart and reverent fear of you. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Preparing For Labor
(Which can be a very frightening prospect!)
Dear Lord, thank you for the ability to carry this child. You created my body to be strong and capable to give birth to children. You are Almighty and know everything that is going on with my body and my baby. You know the exact minute my baby will be born. Lord I pray for the easing of anxiety, worry and fear of the unknown when it comes to childbirth.
I have heard of many stories, and it can fill my heart with worry at times. I pray that you will help me to keep my mind and heart focused upon you during labour- no matter how the process goes. I have written my birth plan out as a desire that I have, but Lord you know what my labour will be like. Whatever the process ends up being like I ask that you keep me calm and peaceful as I deal with the pain and transitions. I pray for an understanding, calm and patient medical team.
May I sense your love and presence during labour, that you are yoked with me, alongside me strengthening me with every contraction and every push until the little one is here. Bless this delivery, Lord, and give me a positive and faith-filled outlook. Thank you Lord in advance, Amen.
Prayer to Pray On Your Due Day
Today is my due date! Thank you Lord for seeing me through all 3 trimesters, and now to full term! Our baby is fully formed- how exciting. Lord you know the right time when this child will be born so I don’t need to be anxious about anything. We are looking forward to welcoming our baby home and starting our family- thank you for the gift of this. Bless my labor and delivery. Please keep me calm, strong and focused.
Lord, help us to place our trust in you even if baby doesn’t come today. May we not be reliant on dates, but on your perfect plan and will. Help me to be sensitive to my body, and to your voice Lord. You are a good and faithful God, and my hope rests in you. Thank you, Lord. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
Prayer to Pray If Your Baby Is Late
When my heart is overwhelmed; Lead me to the rock that is higher than I (Psalm 61:2).
Lord ease my anxious and impatient heart as we wait for baby to arrive. Strengthen me through the discomfort, pain and weariness, and continue to keep my excitement for delivery. Whatever the delay is with baby arriving please help me to be understanding. As long as baby is healthy I ask that you will use this to continue to teach me patience, and trusting in your sovereign hand.
Whatever the outcome turns out to be with labour and delivery you are still a GOOD GOD. I am still so thankful for the gift life within me, and the most important thing is delivering a healthy baby, and also having a healthy outcome for myself. Hello me to remain focused on you Lord. Help me to guard my heart against worry- especially worry that comes from well meaning family members who are constantly messaging wanting to know if the baby has arrived! We look forward to announcing this new incredible life to the world. Thank you Jesus!

A Prayer for Expectant Mothers #1
God of Infinite Goodness, watch over expectant mothers as they await the birth of their child. Grant these women confidence and strength to dispel their anxiety and fear. Bless them with the courage and faith of Mary, always listening to your will and trusting in your loving care. As they prepare to bring new life into the world, grace them with good health and great joy. We look to you and your Son, Jesus Christ, as a sign of mercy and joy. A Prayer for Your Baby in the Womb
Father, I thank You for filling my womb with life. I know this precious little baby comes from You and has been destined by You from the beginning of the world. I thank You for this miracle growing inside me, in the “secret place” of my womb. I thank you that You are giving this little baby to us as a gift, but also as a gift for the world. We can’t wait to see another image of Yourself come forth into this world and the plans You have for this child.
We ask you, Father, in Jesus’ name, to hedge our little baby about with Your mighty protection. Watch over this little one each day as You intricately create him/her in the hidden sanctuary of the womb. We ask for Your divine health and that you will sustain me in good health and vitality throughout this whole pregnancy.
I ask that You will fill me with Your joy and that everyone will see the glory of God upon me as I nurture this precious life within me. Thank You again for this amazing miracle and for giving us an eternal soul that will live forever. It is awesome to think that I am part of something eternal.
I pray that You will keep this baby growing in the womb until FULL TERM and this baby will come forth in Your perfect timing.
In Jesus’ name. Amen.
Many blessings to you from Nancy Campbell

A novena for pregnancy
Below is the novena prayer St. Philomena Novena (or St. Philovena, if you will), courtesy of PrayMoreNovenas.com.
Dearest St. Philomena, your prayers are powerful because you are so close to Our Lord. Your child-like faith and devotion are an inspiration to all of the faithful. Many miracles have occurred as a result of your intercession. In your closeness to Our Lord, please lift up these my intentions in prayer…
(state your intentions)
St. Philomena, at such a young age, you gave everything to Jesus to be come a consecrated virgin for the Kingdom. Giving even more, you gave your live as you suffered a martyr’s death to preserve your gift to our Lord. Pray for me, that I might have the same faith and willingness to accept God’s will no matter the cost.
Prayers for Pregnancy (Our Lady of La Leche)
Prayer for a Healthy Pregnancy, Safe Delivery, and a Healthy Child
O Lord Jesus Christ, through the intercession of Your tender Mother, Our Lady of La Leche, who bore You close to her heart during those long months before Your birth, I place my baby and myself entirely in Your Hands. Free me, I beseech You, from useless and consuming worry. Accept the sacrifice of my aches and pains, which I unite to Your sufferings on the Cross. Above all, most merciful and loving Jesus, protect this child You have given to me from all harm, bestowing the health and vigor every baby needs. Implant in my heart and on my lips the words and prayers of Your Mother and mine, our Lovely Lady of La Leche. All this I ask that my child and I may live to praise forever Your Holy Name. Amen.
Prayer for the Gift of Children
The prayer is asking Our Lady’s intercession for motherhood, or the gift of more children. Lovely Lady of La Leche, most loving mother of the Child Jesus, and my Mother, listen to my humble prayer. Your motherly heart knows my every wish, my every need. To you only, His spotless Virgin Mother, has your Divine Son given to understand the sentiments which fill my soul. Yours was the sacred privilege of being the Mother of the Savior. Intercede with Him now, my loving Mother, that, in accordance with His will, I may become the mother of other children of our heavenly Father. This I ask, O Lady of La Leche, in the Name of your Divine Son, My Lord and Redeemer. Amen.
Muslim Pregnancy Prayers
Prayer for Wanting a Child
The urge to have a child can be very deep for couples. Muslims are advised, when they wish to have a child, to just pray to Allah. There are certain recommended prayers as well. Reading the following passage from the Qur’an is advised to help a couple conceive a child.
“It is He Who has created you from a single person (Adam), and (then) He has created from him his wife [Hawwa (Eve)], in order that he might enjoy the pleasure of living with her. When he had sexual relation with her, she became pregnant and she carried it about lightly. Then when it became heavy, they both invoked Allah, their Lord (saying): ‘If You give us a Salih (good in every aspect) child, we shall indeed be among the grateful.’” – The Noble Qur’an, Al-A’raf, 7:189
Prayer for the Infertile Couple
Infertility can be the most frustrating thing for a couple. Islam offers numerous prayers and passages from the Qur’an to help overcome this problem. The following du’a (prayers) was made by the Prophet Zakariah in his old age for his barren wife. According to the Qur’an, Allah answered his call and gave him a son, Yahyah (John the Baptist). Infertile Muslim couples are often advised to recite this passage to help them conceive a child.
“Rabbi hab li min ladunka dhurriyyatan tayyibatan innaka samee’ al-du’aa'”
” … O my Lord! Grant me from You, a good offspring. You are indeed the All-Hearer of invocation.” – The Noble Quran, Al-‘Imran, 3:38
Prayer to Prevent a Miscarriage or Early Delivery
In Islam, Allah, or God, has 99 names, each of which has special virtues prescribed to it. One of those names, “Al-Mubdi,” or “The Originator,” can be helpful to a pregnant woman when recited multiple times over her:
“Anyone, who while placing his hand on the stomach of his pregnant wife, says this beautiful name of Allah 99 times at Sehri (the pre-dawn time when a Muslim wakes to eat before fasting), neither will she have a miscarriage nor will she deliver prematurely, inshallah (God willing).”
Note: One does not have to fast, and it does not have to be during Ramadan when this name is recited. A husband should just be up at that time when he recites this name for his pregnant wife. – From Al-Hisnul Haseen, by Allamah Muhammad Al-Jazri
Prayer for Alleviating a Difficult Pregnancy
When the nine months of pregnancy becomes difficult, a number of prayers can help make things easier. Recite the following verse from the Qur’an to help ease the pains and stresses of a difficult pregnancy. It is advised that anyone can recite this verse then blow on the stomach or back of the pregnant woman:
“Awa lam yara allatheena kafaroo anna alssamawati waalarda kanata ratqan fafataqnahuma wajaAAalna mina almai kulla shayin hayyin afala yuminoona.”
“Have not those who disbelieve known that the heavens and the earth were of one piece, then We parted them, and We made every living thing of water? Will they not then believe?” – From The Noble Qur’an, Al A’mbiyaa’, 21
Prayer for a Woman’s Labor Pains or Distress
Pregnancy can be nine joyful months, but it can also be fraught with tension and distress. The following prayer, which comes from a hadith, is recommended to be said to help ease a woman’s labor pains or alleviate any distress she may be feeling:
“Allaahumma laa sahla ‘illa maa ja’altahu sahlan wa ‘anta taja’lu-l-hazna ‘idha shi ‘ta sahlan.”
“O Allah, there is nothing easy except what You make easy. You can make grief, if You wish, easy.” – From Al-Hilaali, Volume I, Page 354
For the Safe Delivery of a Baby
Perhaps the most crucial time in a pregnancy comes during the birth process. Muslim women recite a number of prayers to help make for a safe delivery. An oft-quoted hadith from Imam Mohammed Baqir states that a person approached him and told the imam that his wife was in dire health due to the delivery of her child. The imam advised reciting the following prayer:
“And the throes (of child birth) forced her to betake herself unto the trunk of a palm tree. She said, ‘Oh! Had I died ere this, and had been lost in oblivion totally forgotten!’ Then (a voice) called out unto her from beneath her; ‘Grieve not thou, verily Thy Lord hath caused from beneath thee, (to flow) a stream!’ And shale towards thee the trunk of the palm tree it will drop on the dates fresh (and) ripe; And say loudly: Allah has taken you out from your mother’s womb when you were quite ignorant and he endowed you with the sense of hearing, sight and determined for you the ways of thinking so that you should bow in thanks to Him. Let the pains of birth be removed in the similar way: Be removed by permission of Allah”
From the book Tibbul Aaimma’, which paraphrases the birth story of Isa (Jesus) from Surah Maryam
Verses from the Qur’an to Have a Pious Child
Most Muslim women at some time during their pregnancy will be told to recite Surah Maryam from the Qur’an to help them have a safe, easy pregnancy and to help the child be pious and God-fearing. Surah Maryam (or Mary), refers to the birth of Jesus to the virgin Mary, and also tells the story of the Prophet Zakariah, who prayed for his barren wife to have a child. His prayer was answered, and his wife gave birth to John the Baptist, whom Muslims call Yahyah. Women are advised to recite this surah at least once a day during their pregnancy.
Recommended Qur’an Verses for a Happy Pregnancy
The Qur’an is filled with pages upon pages of verses whose virtues are so powerful that reading them is recommended for a variety of situations, including pregnancy. From the time we learn to read the Qur’an, Muslims are taught that reading these verses on a regular basis will ensure them a good life in the present and in the hereafter. Read the following passages for a worry-free pregnancy:
Recite the Surah Ya-Sin for an easy pregnancy and for the spiritual benefit of the unborn child. Recite Surah e-Qadr seven times daily for an easy delivery. And try to read the Qur’an in its entirety once during the pregnancy. Many hadiths say that the sawab, or positive points a Muslim woman gains by whatever good deed she does– like reading the Qur’an–will be increased 70-fold during her pregnancy.
