Prayers For the Dignity of Human Life

From its beginning in the womb to its final breath, and at each stage in between, every human life is endowed with dignity, created in the grace of God’s image. The sanctity of human life is a core principle for Focus on the Family. Human life is sacred and respect for human life should be at the center of all we do. In order to put the “life ethic” into words and practice, it helps to consider where it comes from, what it looks like and how can we incorporate it into our daily lives.

“We cannot love God without first honoring the universal dignity of humanity as the image and likeness of the universal God.” Rabbi Jonathan Sacks

Prayer for Life and Dignity

Eternal God, creator and sustainer of life,
bless us with the courage to defend all life
from conception to natural death.
Bless us with the strength to respect all peoples
from east to west, from north to south,
so that we may truly follow the call of Jesus to be neighbor.
We ask this in the name of Jesus,
who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit.
Amen

Prayer for the Dignity of Human Life

Lord and giver of all life, help us to value each person, created in love by you.

In your mercy, guide and assist our efforts to promote the dignity and value of all human life, born and unborn.

We ask this through Christ our Lord.
Amen.

Prayers For the Dignity of Human LifePrayer for Equal Dignity

We are all equal as human beings

Sister and brother
Employer and employee
Chief officer and manual laborer

Equally loved before God.

Yet, our system discriminates based on

Education
Abilities
Race
Luck

And many of God’s children are placed into a hierarchy of inequality and discomfort.

We are called to stretch out our arms between the tiny, exclusive tip
and the broad, platform of the masses.

To form a bridge, to create a way
For those made unequal to come together as one in equality, in human dignity.

Loving God, Creator of dignity and all that lives,
Help us be bridges.

Help us cry out for respect and value for all
When society forgets that at in our most basic nature,
We are all God’s children. Amen.

Prayers of Intercession

We pray for workers everywhere,
that they will be able to take pride
in the work they do,
be treated with dignity
and receive a fair wage
in return for their labor.

We pray for employers,
that they will be motivated
by compassion and a concern
for the common good,
leading them to value people
more than profit.

We pray for decision makers
and world leaders,
that they will use the power
they have for the good of all peoples.

We pray for ourselves,
that we may take time
to reflect on our own talents
and share our gifts to benefit
our community and wider world.

Entrustment of the Cause of Life

O Mary,
bright dawn of the new world,
Mother of the living,
to you do we entrust the cause of life
Look down, O Mother,
upon the vast numbers
of babies not allowed to be born,
of the poor whose lives are made difficult,
of men and women
who are victims of brutal violence,
of the elderly and the sick killed
by indifference or out of misguided mercy.

Grant that all who believe in your Son
may proclaim the Gospel of life
with honesty and love
to the people of our time.

Obtain for them the grace
to accept that Gospel
as a gift ever new,
the joy of celebrating it with gratitude
throughout their lives
and the courage to bear witness to it
resolutely, in order to build,
together with all people of good will,
the civilization of truth and love,
to the praise and glory of God,
the Creator and lover of life.

― Pope John Paul II, Evangelium Vitae (1995)

Prayer for Unborn

Heavenly Father, Creator of all Life,

We thank you for the gift of Life that you have given to each of us. You have made us Your children, and filled us with Your Holy Spirit.

We turn to You now, Our Father, to ask for Your protection for our unborn brothers and sisters. We pray that mothers and fathers will place the Life of their unborn children above their own needs and wants. We pray that family and community members will offer their support for unborn children. We pray that the well-being of both mother and child will be the focus of all health care workers. And we pray that government leaders will seek ways to uphold the dignity of human life.

We place all these prayers before you through the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Amen.

We have received life from your hands.
We have been created male and female with the power
to love and care for each other and to share in your creation.
We thank you for this gift.
We ask your help to cherish and respect what you have created.
We ask your help to use the gift of sexuality in the way you have intended. Amen.

A Prayer for Wisdom (Intermediate/Senior)

Creator God, you have made us in your image, male and female.
You are life and you are love.
Open our hearts so that we may reflect your image in all we say and do.

You know and love each one of us.
You have known and loved us from the moment we were conceived.
Open our hearts to your plan for us so that we may be fully alive.

You have given us the blessing of other people to share our lives.
Family members, friends, teachers, and others who reflect your wisdom.
Open our hearts so that we may welcome their words of guidance.

You have given us the promise of forgiveness, through your son, Jesus.
You ask us to be honest with ourselves and recognize our weaknesses and sins.
Open our hearts so that we may be healed and, with your help, start anew.
Amen.

Prayers For the Dignity of Human LifePrayer for Parents

Loving Creator, author of life,
we thank you for our special role
in family life and for the gift we
share with you in creating others
in your own image and likeness.
Life is so precious and so beautiful,
mingling souls in so mysterious and
satisfying ways.

May our human love and friendship
reflect your own divine love.
May we and our children be committed
to being fully alive to your call and challenge,
ever growing in discipleship and friendship
with Jesus who alone is the way, the truth and the life.

May we praise you always.
May we, without seeming to preach,
teach you to our children and to others,
not so much by our words as by our example.
