Prayers for Animals and Pets

Blessing of animals can be either of the animal or of the human-animal relationship, and can apply to pets and other companion animals, or to agricultural animals and working and other animals which humans depend on or interact with.

Blessing of Animals

Blessed are you, Lord God, maker of all living creatures. You called forth fish in the sea, birds in the air and animals on the land. You inspired Saint Francis to call all of them his brothers and sisters. We ask you to bless this pet. By the power of your love, enable it to live according to your plan. May we always praise you for all your beauty in creation. Blessed are you, Lord our God, in all your creatures! Amen.

A Pet Blessing

Dearest God, Heavenly Father
maker of all living creatures,
we ask you to bless (name of pet),
who brings so much joy into our lives.
By the power of Your love,
enable him (her) to live according to your plan.
May we always praise You for all Your beauty in creation.
who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,
Blessed are You, God, in all Your creatures!

Here is the more common Prayer for Animals, which is attributed to Schweitzer, although he was probably not the author. This version is from Animals, Nature and Albert Schweitzer

Prayer for the Animals

When you walk through a storm,
Hold your head up high,
And don’t be afraid of the dark.
At the end of a storm,
There’s a golden sky,
And the sweet silver song of a lark.
Walk on through the wind, Walk on through the rain,
Though your dreams be tossed and blown…
Walk on, walk on, with hope in your heart,
And you’ll never walk alone…….
You’ll never walk alone.
Walk on, walk on, with hope in your heart,
And you’ll never walk alone…….
You’ll never walk alone.

A Prayer for Animals

Hear our humble prayer, O God, for our friends, the animals,
especially for animals who are suffering:
for any that are hunted or lost of deserted
or frightened or hungry;
for all that must be put to death.
We entreat for them all Thy mercy and pity,
and for those who deal with them
we ask a heart of compassion and gentle hands and kindly words.
Make us, ourselves, to be true friends  to animals
and so to share the blessings of the merciful.

– Albert Schweitzer

***

There is a prayer for animals which Schweitzer composed and recited as a child. However it is quite short and is not the one widely known. Here it is, as translated by C. T. Campion, from Memoirs of Childhood and Youth:

O, heavenly Father, protect and bless all things that have breath;
guard them from all evil,
and let them sleep in peace.

– Albert Schweitzer

Albert Schweitzer’s Offering

We entreat for them all
your mercy and pity,
and for those who deal with them
we ask a heart of compassion
and gentle hands and kindly words.
Make us, ourselves,
to be true friends to animals
and so to share the blessings of the Merciful.

A Prayer For Our Pets

O God, you have redeemed all creation through your eternal Word; Protect our pets, your creatures, who provide us with joy and nonjudgmental companionship; And give us respect for all of your Word-redeemed creation, that we may care for it as stewards of creation. Amen.

A Prayer for Pets

God, Creator of all living things, we ask that as we light our candles, the healing warmth of love will flow into the brokenhearted who are tending their ailing pets.
Give to them Your strength and comfort.
We also pray that the soft glow of light will part the clouds of grief and sorrow to surround our furbabies at the Bridge.

Saint Francis of Assisi, for Sick Animals

Heavenly Father, you created all things for your glory and made us stewards of this creature If it is your will, restore it to health and strength. Blessed are you, Lord God, and holy is your name for ever and ever. Amen

Saint Francis of Assisi, for our Animal Friends

Heavenly Father, our human ties with our friends of other species is wonderful and special gift from You. We now ask You to grant our special animal companions your Fatherly care and healing power to take away any suffering they have. Give us, their human friends, new understanding of our responsibilities to these creatures of Yours. They have trust in us as we have in You; our souls and theirs are on this earth together to give one another friendship, affection, and caring. Take our heartfelt prayers and fill Your ill or suffering animals with healing Light and strength to overcome whatever weakness of body they have.

(Here mention the names of the animals needing prayer).

Your goodness is turned upon every living thing and Your grace flows to all Your creatures. From our souls to theirs goodness flows, touching each of us with the reflection of Your love. Grant to our special animal companions long and healthy lives. Give them good relationships with us, and if You see fit to take them from us, help us to understand that they are not gone from us, but only drawing closer to You. Grant our prayer through the intercession of good St. Francis of Assisi, who honored You through all Your creatures. Give him the power to watch over our animal friends until they are safely with You in eternity, where we someday hope to join them in giving You honor forever. Amen.

(You can make this a Novena for a sick pet, by praying this prayer for 9 consecutive days)

Prayer for My Pet

In Your infinite wisdom, Lord God,

The Bridge (Pet Loss Comfort)

There is a bridge connecting Heaven and Earth.
It is called “The Rainbow Bridge” because of its
many colors.
Just this side of the Rainbow Bridge,
there is a land of meadows, hills and
valleys with lush green grass.
When a beloved pet dies, the pet goes to this place. There is always food and water and warm Spring
weather.
Those old and frail animals are young again.
Those who have been maimed are made whole again.
They play all day with each other.
But there is only one thing missing.
They are not with their special person who
loved them on earth.
So, each day, they run and play until the day comes when one suddenly stops playing and looks up.
The nose twitches, the ears are up, the eyes are staring, and this one runs from the group.
You have been seen.
When you and your special friend meet,
you take him or her in your arms and embrace.
Your face is kissed again and again.
You look once more into the eyes of your trusting pet. Then, you cross the Rainbow Bridge together, never again to be separated.

Prayer For Loss Of A Pet

Dear heavenly Father, You made such a beautiful world and filled it with so much loveliness.. and we thank You for the animals and birds  and particularly for the pets that mean so much to us and which help to brighten the lives of so many people.

But Lord You know that too often the lives of our pets pass away long before we do and it is so hard to say goodbye when a faithful and much-loved animal is finally laid to rest.

So as we say our goodbyes to this special animal that we have all grown to love so much.. we ask for Your loving-comfort to fill each of our hearts.. knowing that we all are feeling an aching void inside.

Look down especially we pray on all those who may be going through a similar heartbreak of losing of their own pet – especially we lift up those people that are old and lonely or infirm and isolated. Draw close to all who are morning the loss of a pet today and may this be a time when each one of us draws closer to You, with grateful thanks for all Your goodness and grace to us , in Jesus name we pray,
Amen.

A Covenant Liturgy for Human and Animal Companions

Mindful of our kinship with all living creatures, and our responsibility to care for them, let us renew our covenant with the animals in our care.

Leader: Will you name this creature?

Human: (name of animal is given)

Leader: Will you care for [name], and love and protect him/her, in good times and bad, as long as he/she lives?

Human: I will.

(The human companion is invited to touch/pat/stroke the animal as a sign of the covenant reaffirmed between them.)

We give thanks for the creatures who live alongside us as companions and friends; for their loyalty, love, and trust which enrich our lives and give us joy. May we learn the value of kindness, the power of mercy, the strength of gentleness, and a new spirit of humility. Amen.
