Creation and Evolution

The creation and evolution involves an ongoing, recurring cultural, political, and theological dispute about the origins of the Earth, of humanity, and of other life. In accordance with creationism, species were once widely believed to be fixed products of divine creation, but since the mid-19th century, evolution by natural selection has been established by the scientific community as an empirical scientific fact.

The debate is religious, not scientific: in the scientific community, evolution is accepted as fact and efforts to sustain the traditional view are almost universally regarded as pseudoscience. While the controversy has a long history, today it has retreated to be mainly over what constitutes good science education, with the politics of creationism primarily focusing on the teaching of creationism in public education.

Selective Breeding

Selective Breeding Selective breeding (also called artificial selection) is the process by which humans use animal breeding and plant breeding to selectively develop particular phenotypic traits (characteristics) by choosing which typically animal or plant males and females will sexually reproduce and have offspring together. Domesticated animals are known as breeds, normally bred by a professional breeder, while domesticated plants are known as varieties, cultigens, cultivars, or breeds. Two purebred...

Theology of Creationism and Evolution

Theology of Creationism and Evolution The theology of creation and evolution is theology that deals with issues concerning the universe, the life, and especially man, in terms of creation or evolution. Creationism Creationism is the religious belief that the universe and life originated “from specific acts of divine creation“, as opposed to the scientific conclusion that they came about through natural processes such as evolution. Churches address the theological implications...

Applications of Evolution Applications of evolution can be seen in different fields of science ranging from regular science to social science such as genetics, ecology, ethics, and physiology. Evolutionary biology, in particular the understanding of how organisms evolve through natural selection, is an area of science with many practical applications....

Outline of Evolution

Outline of Evolution Evolution – change in heritable traits of biological organisms over generations due to natural selection, mutation, gene flow, and genetic drift. Also known as descent with modification. Over time these evolutionary processes lead to formation of new species (speciation), changes within lineages (anagenesis), and loss of species (extinction). “Evolution” is also another name for evolutionary biology, the...

Objections to Evolution

Objections to Evolution Objections to evolution have been raised since evolutionary ideas came to prominence in the 19th century. When Charles Darwin published his 1859 book On the Origin of Species, his theory of evolution (the idea that species arose through descent with modification from a single common ancestor in a process driven by natural selection) initially met opposition from scientists with different theories,...

Allegorical Interpretations of Genesis

Allegorical Interpretations of Genesis Allegorical interpretations of Genesis are readings of the biblical Book of Genesis that treat elements of the narrative as symbols or types, rather than viewing them literally as recording historical events. Secondly, it is a state reached by the population during that process. Thirdly, it is a phenotypic trait or adaptive trait, with a functional role in each individual organism, that is maintained and has...
