Supplication (petitioning) is a form of prayer, wherein one party humbly or earnestly asks another party to provide something, either for the party who is doing the supplicating (e.g., “Please spare my life.”) or on behalf of someone else.

Supplication is commonly defined as: “The action of asking or begging for something earnestly or humbly.” It was most commonly used before the year 1600 as well as the early 1800s . Today it is not commonly used, but those that use the King James Bible are familiar with the term. Historically, the word supplication comes from a Latin term, supplicare, which means to plead humbly and has the word supple as its root. The fact that the word supplication has the word supple at its root provides great insight for us in understanding a prayer of supplication.

“Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God.” Philippians 4:6

A Supplication Prayer #1

O God! You are my Lord; I am a slave.
You are the Creator; I am the one created.
You are the Provider; I am the one provided.
You are the Owner; I am the one owned.
You are the Mighty and Glorious; I am the one abased and wretched.
Your are the Absolutely Rich One; I am the one absolutely poor.
You are the All-Living; I am the one dead,
You are the All-Permanent; I am the one mortal.

A Supplication Prayer #2

A beloved who disappears by declining or setting is not beautiful, for one that is doomed to decline cannot be truly beautiful. It is not-it should not be-loved in the heart for the heart is created for eternal love and is the mirror of the Eternally-Besought-of-All.

A desired one who is doomed to disappear below the horizon is not worthy of the heart’s attachment or the mind’s preoccupation. It cannot be the object of desires, and is not worthy of being regretted after. So why should the heart adore such a one and be attached to it?

I neither seek nor desire anything mortal. For I am myself mortal, and I do not desire one who is mortal. What have I do with any such?

A worshipped one buried in decay-I do not invoke such a one, nor seek refuge with it. For I am infinitely needy and impotent. One that is itself powerless can offer no cure for my endless pains, nor can it solve my infinitely deep wounds. How can one who cannot save himself from decay be an object of worship?

The mind that is obsessed with appearances wails despairingly on seeing the decay of the things it adores in this universe of upheavals, while the spirit, which seeks an eternal beloved, also wails, saying: ‘I love not the things that set.’

I do not want, I do not desire, separation, and I cannot endure it.

Meetings followed immediately by separation are not worth troubling about; they are not worthy of being longed for especially. For just as the disappearance of pleasures is pain, imagining it is pain also. The works of the lovers, that is, the works of poetry on metaphorical love-love for the opposite sex-are all lamentations caused by the pain arising from imagining this disappearance. If you were to condense the spirit of all the works of such poetry, from each would flow this lament.

It is because of the pain and tribulations coming from those meetings doomed to end and those painful metaphorical loves, that my heart cries out and, like Abraham, says: ‘I love not the things that set!’

If you desire permanence in this transient world, permanence is born out of transience. Annihilate yourself with regard to your evil-commanding soul, so that you may gain permanence.

Free yourself of bad morals, which are the basis of worldly adoration, and realize self-annihilation. Sacrifice the goods and property that are in your disposal in the way of the True Beloved. See the end of beings, which marks extinction. The way leading from this world to permanence passes through self-annihilation.

The human mind, which is absorbed in causality, laments despairingly in bewilderment over the upheavals caused by the decay of the world. The conscience, which desires true existence, like Abraham, wails, ‘I love not the things that set.’ It severs the connection with metaphorical beloveds and decaying beings, and is attached to the Truly Existent One, the Eternal Beloved.

O my mean soul! Know that the world and all beings are certainly mortal, but you may find a way leading to the Permanent Being in each mortal thing, and may discern two gleams, two mysteries, of the manifestations of the Undying Beloved’s Grace, on condition that you succeed in sacrificing your mortal being.

In each bounty the act of bestowing is discerned and the favor of the Most Merciful perceived. If you succeed in discerning the act of bestowing through the thing bestowed, you will find the Bestower. Also, each work of the Eternally-Besought-of-All points out the All-Majestic Maker’s Names like a missive. If you succeed in understanding the meaning through the inscription, you will find by means of the Names the One called by those Names. Since you can find out the kernel, the essence, of these transient things, obtain it. You can throw away without pity their meaningless shells, their outer coverings, into the flood of mortality.

Indeed, in the universe there is not a single thing which is not a word of embodied meaning and does not show many of the All-Majestic Maker’s Names. Since beings are words, words of Divine Power, understand their meanings and place them in your heart. Fearlessly cast the letters left without meaning into the wind of transience. After they are gone, do not concern and occupy yourself with them any more.

The worldly mind, which is preoccupied in appearances and whose capital consists of only the knowledge of the material world, cries out despairingly in bewilderment and frustration, as its chains of thought finally end in nothingness and non-existence. It seeks a true way leading to truth. Since the heart has withdrawn from those that set and are mortal, since the heart has abandoned the deceiving beloveds, and since the conscience has turned away from transitory beings, you too, my wretched soul, seek help in ‘I love not the things that set,’ and be saved.

Prayer of Supplication

O Holy Souls, as one truly devoted to you I promise never to forget you, and continually to pray to the Most High for your release. I beseech you to respond to this offering which I make to you, and obtain for me from God, with Whom you are so powerful on behalf of the living, that I may be freed from all dangers of soul and body.

I beg both for myself and for my relations and benefactors, friends and enemies, pardon for our sins, and the grace of perseverance in good, whereby we may save our souls. Obtain for us peace of heart; assist us in all our actions; succor us promptly in all our spiritual and temporal needs; console and defend us in our dangers.

Pray for the Supreme Pontifff, for the exaltation of Holy Church, for peace between nations, for Christian rulers, and for tranquility among peoples; and grant that we may one day all rejoice together in paradise.

Amen.

Immanuel: A Prayer of Supplication

Therefore the Lord Himself will give you a sign: Behold, a virgin will be with child and bear a son, and she will call His name Immanuel (Immanuel). Isaiah 7:14

Immanuel, I pray that people around the world and in our nation will come to know you. I pray that your name will be spread in such a way that it will draw people to you. Strengthen your followers in your kingdom to live lives that reflect your glory and point people to you as King, as God with us. May we experience you more fully and intimately each and every day. May you not simply be distant – a God far off, but may we know you as Immanuel, God with us. May I know you as Immanuel, God with me. (Immanuel Meaning: God with us.)

Supplication to seek forgiveness for ourselves and others!

Short Prayers of Supplication

Litany of Supplication

The “Great Entrance” has taken place.  The Holy Gifts, later to be changed into the real Body and Blood of our Lord Jesus, have been brought from the “Prothesis” (Preparation Table) in a Procession and placed upon the Holy Altar Table.  The Deacon or the Priest commence the “Petitions” as follows:

Let us complete our prayer and supplication to the Lord.

Even though we have expressed our prayers, it is time now to make those prayers more complete because the Great Moment is soon at hand.

For the Precious Gifts here presented, let us beseech the Lord.

At this point our hearts should be clean of any vengefulness maliciousness or negative attitudes towards others. Remember the Lords words,

Therefore if you bring your gift to the altar, and there remember that your brother has something against you, leave your gift there before the altar, and go your way. First be reconciled to your brother, and then come and offer your gift (Matt 5:23-24).

We entreat, we beseech the Lord to receive, to accept these Gifts, which we are offering and which in turn will grant us a new spirit.

For our deliverance from all affliction, wrath, danger, and necessity, let us beseech the Lord.

Then we hear a grouping of six more petitions, to which the congregation chants, “Grant this, O Lord.

For this whole day, that it may be perfect, holy, peaceful, and sinless, let us ask of the Lord.

All Christians should strive to live perfect days blessed with Christian acts.  But since many of us so easily drift from the prescribed course, at this moment of the Liturgy we ask our Lord to give us a peaceful day with all that surrounds us and more so a blameless one – to help us avoid any possible sin.

For an Angel of peace, a faithful guide, a guardian of our souls and bodies, let us ask of the Lord.

We ask God to send us each day a guardian angel over our souls. Such an angel guides us to enlightenment and divine knowledge of faith. He also takes our payers and offers them to God at the heavenly throne. He protects from all evil and from life’s temptations. He is an aid in our spiritual struggles. During our baptism we were offered an Angel.

For the forgiveness and remission of our sins and transgressions, let us ask of the Lord.

We pray to our Lord to forgive us from our sins, but also from every transgression, which we so often commit.  By remitting our sins we are re-instated in His Grace and become candidates of His Kingdom in Heaven.

For all things that are good and profitable unto our souls, and for the peace in the world, let us ask of the Lord.

Saint Paul tells us in his first Epistle to the Corinthians that “everything is permitted to us, but not everything is to our advantage.” We therefore must distinguish between what is good and what is bad for our life. This is a major problem in this day and age of materialism. We tend to think only about material and sensual pleasures, glory and power, authority, honors, physical rest, having a good time, making easy money and so forth. In reality we are pretty heard hearted and indifferent to many important moral issues. We are not well equipped to make the proper discernment for what is best for our soul. In this petition we pray that God grants us those things which are profitable to our soul and surely will ultimately be profitable to our body.

In this fourth petition we also pray for peace in the world as we also prayed during the beginning of the Holy Liturgy.

That we may complete the remainder of our lives in peace and penitence, let us ask of the Lord.

In the first petition we asked the Lord to safeguard us from sin for the whole day. We are living a life filled with anxiety and this world’s matters and have little appreciation about our life that is quickly passing by. Now through this petition we beseech the Lord to grant us the remainder of our days, peace of mind and heart, and also to aid us to recognize our sins for which we must truly repent, to ultimately save our souls.

Our happiness depends on our witnessing of our conscience. This is our ability to sleep calmly without any feelings of guilt. When we have peace in our heart, the Holy spirit nurtures and comforts us. To find this peace we must repent. We must be aware of our sinfulness and have sorrow over our condition and seek help from God. We all have a tendency to sin and we need to continually ask for God’s help to help us in our struggle.

That the end of our lives may be Christian, without pain, blameless, and peaceful, and for a good account before the fearful judgment seat of Christ, let us ask of the Lord.

All of our lives should be lived according to the Christian principles, unto the very end. If we do our death will be the beginning of a new eternal life. For this we ask the Lord to help us to our very last day, to live without torment of various ailments and sicknesses, to  live without being ashamed of any of our acts, to live in peace with all, but more so to enable us to give a good account, a good defense when we shall come face to face with our God Jesus, on the day of the Last Judgment.

After the six petitions we again commemorate the ever blessed Virgin Mary and we are reminded of her pure life and that of the Saints.

During these petitions, inside the Altar the Priest recites a very significant prayer:

O Lord, God Almighty, Who alone art Holy; Who dost receive the sacrifice of praise from those, who call upon Thee with all their heart, receive also the supplication of us sinners, and accept it at Thy Holy Altar, and enable us to offer to Thee Gifts and spiritual sacrifices, for our sins and for the omissions of the people; and make us worthy to find grace in Thy Sight, that our sacrifice may be well pleasing unto Thee, and that the good Spirit of Thy grace may dwell upon us, and upon these Gifts presented here, and upon all Thy people.

The ending of this beautiful prayer is heard aloud by the faithful as follows:

Through the mercies of Thine Only-Begotten Son, with Whom Thou art blessed, together with Thine All-Holy and good and life-giving Spirit, now and for ever, and from all Ages to all Ages.
