Insanity, madness, and craziness are terms that describe a spectrum of individual and group behaviors that are characterized by certain abnormal mental or behavioral patterns. Insanity can be manifest as violations of societal norms, including a person or persons becoming a danger to themselves or to other people. Conceptually, mental insanity also is associated with the biological phenomenon of contagion (that mental illness is infectious) as in the case of copycat suicides. In contemporary usage, the term insanity is an informal, un-scientific term denoting “mental instability”; thus, the term insanity defense is the legal definition of mental instability. In medicine, the general term psychosis is used to include the presence either of delusions or of hallucinations or both in a patient; and psychiatric illness is “psychopathology“, not mental insanity.

Pastoral Prayer

National Day of Prayer for Mental Illness Recovery and Understanding

Loving Creator, we come to you on this National Day of Prayer for Mental Illness Recovery and Understanding because we know that you are a God of love and compassion. We come as people of all creeds and all nations seeking your presence, comfort and guidance. We come as consumers, family members, friends, co-workers and mental health professionals. We come this day because we believe that you, Divine One, love each one of us just as we are and you walk with us on our individual journeys through life. You see the ignorance and injustice that divides and separates persons struggling with mental illness and you weep with us.

Give us courage to face our challenges and open us today to the many ways you are already working in our midst. Help us to identify mental illness as the disease it is, that we might have courage and wisdom in the face of ignorance and stigma. Inspire us as we seek to overcome fear, acquire knowledge, and advocate for compassionate and enlightened treatment and services.

Lead us as we open our hearts and homes, our communities and job opportunities, our houses of worship and communities of faith. Enable us to find ways to be inclusive of persons living with mental illness in our everyday lives. Be with doctors, therapists, researchers, social workers, and all those in the helping professions as they seek to overcome ignorance and injustice with care and compassion.

Sometimes, Divine Spirit, we feel discouraged and hopeless in the face of so many challenges. Help us to see ourselves as you see us…persons of value and worth…persons of creativity and potential. May we come to understand the interconnectedness of mind, body and spirit in bringing about health and wholeness. And may we go forward into our communities with a renewed sense of vision, hope and possibility for the future. Amen.

Prayer for Mental Illness

(a prayer for someone suffering with mental illness for their healing)

Dear Lord Jesus, I come before you to ask for the restoration and healing of my mind. Thank you that you became fully human and walked amongst us, so you understand the complexities of the human brain. So I lay this mental illness before the cross. I surrender it now to your grace, knowing that you have paid the price for my freedom. Come, Holy Spirit bring the touch of new balance, correction and wellbeing to my thought life. Come into the memories of my past and the confusion of my present with new hope, hope for a future of breaking free from mental illness into a new dawn. Lord, right now I trust in the power of your unfailing love and grace, and the freedom that is found in you. Come release me into all the good things that you have instore for me. Amen.

Short prayer for mental strength

Still my mind Lord. Come anchor me in your word and save my thoughts from endless drift. I will not go out onto the sea until my heart is at rest. Pull me into your harbour, for the ebb and flow of tides has left me dizzy, all at sea. I need a chance to just abide, to feel my feet touch solid ground. May time stand still until I find I’m filled up, until I’ve been refashioned and remade. Help me gather up my feelings, sift the memories, tend to the cracks. Help me search for tides that keep me, when I’m ready to go back. Then when I feel the winds are changing, I’m sail ready, strong and full. I’ll be safe on my adventures, prepared and restored in you.

A Prayer for Unconsciousness or Temporary Insanity

This prayer is recited for a person in trance or unconsciousness or temporary insanity, he or she shall become normal.
It is also recited to make a woman give birth to a living child if there were several miscarriages.
To seek forgiveness of sins and to get enough sustenance, recite this prayer on 40 consecutive Fridays, after sunset.

In the name of God, the beneficent, the merciful.

O God, truly, I beseech You. O He who is beyond the visual range
of created beings on account of the splendor of His light.
O he was demonstrates Himself through His majesty and might, and
makes known His purity and holiness by doing good (to His creation).

O He who is high and exalted in glory and greatness, having no equal in
distinction and eminence. O He who separates the good from the bad, in all affairs, how much intricate or remote they may be, for readily they lay bare every secret, in no time, on receiving His command.

O He in answer to whose call stood firm the heavens and the earths.
O He who made the skies more beautiful by decorating it with twinkling
stars, also a (useful) guide for the people wandering in (darkness).

O He who, very kindly, with delicate fineness, gave brightness to the moon,
to spread soft light I the gloomy dark night.

O He who filled the sun with radiating luminous energy, to make easy, for
mankind, pursuit of economic activity, and also a sure sign, separating
night form the day by His ever-dominating authority.

O He to who (alone) we must bow down to show gratitude in return of the
inundating downpour of His favors and bounties.

I beseech You, in the name of the intricate, strongly tied, hard to understand glory of Your arsh (seat of divine authority); (in the name of) the utmost mercy of Your book, and (in the name) of all names, which are Yours, (You) referred to Yourself, or You chose for Yourself, but kept in Your transcendental wisdom; (In the name of) all Your names, which are Yours, (You) revealed in Your book, or (those name which are) firmly and permanently learnt by heart by the pure ever prostrating (angles) all over Your arsh; and from their secret thoughts comes to the forefront sincere expression of unique and incomparable oneness of God (monotheism); and sure affirmation of Your singleness (without an equal), sharing together, with total submissiveness to You.

Verily You are God. You are God. You are God. there is no god except
You. And I beseech You, in name of Your names, through which You communicated to Kalim (Moses) on the celebrated mountain (Sina).

Thereafter the splendor of the unseeable light flashed magnificently, pulling down the mountain to ground level, breaking it into small pieces, (as if prostrating) before Your glory and majesty, and awe inspiring honour; trembling on account of Your omnipotent power; and frightsome, collapsing before You. Therefore, there is no god except You. There is no god except
You.

And I beseech You, in the name of Your name, by which You partitioned the eyebrows of the eyes of on-lookers (to open the eyes and see), and by which You lets Your wisdom operate, and the proofs with which Your prophets made known the truth, whose minds and hearts were aware of Your being, while You are hidden in the secret stations of the innermost seclusion.

I beseech You, in the name of this particular name, to send blessings on Muhammad on the children of Muhammad, and send away from me, and from other suffering people, and from all the believing men and women, all frustrations, infirmities, accidents, diseases, errors, sins, doubts, polytheism, infidelity, rebellion, hypocrisy, destruction, ill-will, ignorance, anger, hardship, distress, corruption of conscience, impeding revenge, hostility of the enemies, subjugation to the cruel tyrants.

Verily You hear supplications, and is kind as much as You will.

Suffering from Mental Illness

Lord of goodness and grace, we pray for Your special touch on all of those people everywhere who are suffering from mental illness. Help them to not despair, but to trust in Your mighty healing hand. Help them find good doctors and therapists who will give them proper treatment. Help them to find medication that relieves their symptoms without adverse side effects and help them remain on their counseling and medication regime. Amen.

People Living with Mental Illness

Loving God, I pray for all whose brains have been hurt by disease, injury, stress, trauma, and other factors of human life in a hard world. I pray for all who love them and want to help. I pray for your comfort in their grief, hope amid loss, and the balm of community with people who understand.

For people with mental illness–may they find hope in you and feel your longing for them.
For parents of children with mental illness–may they know the limits of their power both to cause and to cure.
For children of parents with mental illness–may they know you as loving parent and find places where they can grow up in safety, no matter how old they are.
For friends of suffering people–may they resist the temptation to try to “fix” their friends and recognize the simple power of their loving presence.
For spiritual leaders–may they deny both helplessness and overconfidence, courageously serving as first responders and faithful shepherds.
For people who need treatment and don’t receive it–may they recognize their need, believe life can be better, and find people who can help.
For those burdened by shame and stigma–may they walk into the light and find compassionate people.

Lord, I pray for light in the darkness. I pray that people with vulnerable minds will find hope and help among followers of Christ who will love them and point them toward what they need while letting them live with that need. I pray for acceptance and grace–the same kind of grace you offer so freely to all. I pray that many churches will embrace the opportunity for messy and sometimes thankless ministry among the marginalized, in the name of the one whose love knows no margins.

Amen.

Those suffering from Mental Illness

This evening I was asked to pray the Invocation for the 23rd Candlelight Service for the Mentally Ill. Here was my prayer:

Eternal God, giver of life we gather here this evening to pray for our community, for each other and especially those who suffer with a diagnosis of mental illness.

Among us this evening are those who live with mental illness, we pray for your healing mercies to touch them, strengthen them, love them.

Some among us suffer from the diseases of addictions that hold them captive, we pray for their healing.

We commend to your mercy and defense all who are contemplating suicide today, right now. Bring someone or something to intervene.

For the families who have lost a loved one to mental illness, bring them comfort in trusting that your grace accepts their ill loved one, despite the final desperate act that brought them into your loving arms.

Empower us to speak up for those who do not have a voice; save us from making peace with the injustices in the social systems that have failed them.

Guide those who do research for the prevention and treatment of mental illnesses; uphold them with your compassion and diligence.

For those who are in recovery and for treatments that enable them to return to full and rewarding lives, we give you thanks.

For those who work daily to bring healing, comfort and justice for those who live with mental illness we give thanks and pray they may have the strength to carry on their work.

Heavenly Father, Giver of life and health, we trust that in your time and way, you will dispel all darkness with your light, all confusion with your order, all fear with your peace. Shalom.
