We have collected some of the best prayers against the temptation to use them in requests to God. May these prayers for safety bring you comfort and peace of mind. May these prayers for strength encourage your spirit and strengthen your faith.

Temptation is a desire to engage in short-term urges for enjoyment that threatens long-term goals. In the context of some religions, the temptation is the inclination to sin. Temptation also describes the coaxing or inducing a person into committing such an act, by manipulation or otherwise of curiositydesire, or fear of losing something important to a person.

In the context of self-control and ego depletion, the temptation is described as an immediate, pleasurable urge and/or impulse that disrupts an individual’s ability to wait for the long-term goals, which that individual hopes to attain.

Prayer Against Temptation #1

Behold me, O my God, at Your feet! I do not deserve mercy, but O my Redeemer, the blood which You have shed for me encourages me and obliges me to hope for it. How often I have offended You, repented, and yet have I again fallen into the same sin. O my God, I wish to amend, and in order to be faithful to You, I will place all my confidence in You. I will, whenever I am tempted, instantly have recourse to You. Until now, I have trusted in my own promises and resolutions and have neglected to recommend myself to You in my temptations. This has been the cause of my repeated failures. From this day forward, be You, O Lord, my strength, and this shall I be able to do all things, for “I can do all things in Him who strengthens me.” Amen.

Prayer against temptation #2

Dear Lord, I want to thank you because you have always been there for me even when I am faced with trials and temptations. I have no power of my own Lord and I rely on your power to overcome temptation today.

Lord, please open my eyes to see and to be able to recognize temptation today. I also request for the power to flee from the appearance of sin at first sight even if it is so enticing that makes it difficult to flee from. Amen.

Prayer Against Temptation #3

Lord Jesus Christ, my old fleshly nature is tempting me to _______________________________(name the temptation, e.g., lust, anger, gossip).  and I know that if it is left to itself, it is wicked enough to cause me to sin against You.

Second, the realization that we have died with Christ (Romans 6:11; Galatians 5:24). We should “count (ourselves) dead to sin but alive to
God in Christ Jesus.”  Acknowledge this truth to Christ in prayer:

Lord Jesus Christ, I affirm that through the work of Your cross I am dead with You to the rule and control of my flesh and its desire toward
____________________________________(name of fleshly temptation being experienced at that moment, e.g. anger, lust).

Third, living in the control of the Holy Spirit (Galatians 5:16-25).  This requires that we turn to the Holy Spirit:

Blessed Holy Spirit, I ask You now to replace this fleshly desire that is tempting me toward _____________________________ (state the fleshly appeal: e.g. jealousy, lust) with the fruit of Your control.

Put within my mind, will, and emotions Your love, joy, peace, patience and all the virtues that my Lord Jesus Christ enables me to live out for
His glory. Amen.

Prayer Against Temptation #4

Beloved Jesus Christ: my Lord, my King, my Savior, my God. You who are God, but also were man, who was tempted by the devil as any other human being, please give me the strength to reject sin and the grace to remain spotless as you are.
Reign in my heart with your Power, Wisdom, Love , Peace , Grace, Purity, Mercy, Glory and Joy.

You said to Satan:

HUMAN BEINGS LIVE NOT ON BREAD ALONE, BUT ON EVERY WORD THAT COMES FROM THE MOUTH OF GOD.

How many times I have failed you my Lord, when I didn’t obey your commandments, I have rejected you my King when I allowed the enticements of this world to reign in my heart, I have forgotten you my God when my mind has been full of the things of the world.
My Lord and my God, give me hunger for your living bread, feed me with your Word and with the Sacrament of your flesh and blood. Give me the strength to control the appetite of my senses, purify and nourish my soul with your food, which is to do the will of the Heavenly Father.

You said to Satan:

YOU MUST DO HOMAGE TO THE LORD YOUR GOD, HIM ALONE YOU MUST SERVE.

How many times the riches of this world, the temptations of pride, greed, envy, jealousy and egoism have dethroned you my God from my heart.

I sincerely repent of this insult to your Majesty.

Jesus, give me the grace to be able to reject the things of this world, to detach myself from all that is around me, and to cling strongly to your spirit within me.

I love you with all my heart, with all my mind, with all my soul, with all my strength and with the spirit you have given me.

I worship and obey you my Lord, I honor you my King, I praise you and bless you, and my heart is full of thanksgiving.

I will serve you by loving my brothers and sisters and with your strength I will conquer the world, the devil and the flesh.

You said to Satan:

DO NOT PUT THE LORD YOUR GOD TO THE TEST.

Jesus, whenever I have sinned, I have thrown my soul against the rocks of death, wounding it mortally. I have put you to the test. Jesus, you the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world, by your wounds heal my body, my mind and my soul.

Jesus, I have offended you many times, please forgive me my sins. Wash away my iniquities, cleanse me from my sin, purify me, protect me and save me with your precious blood, sanctify me with your Holy Spirit, re-make me once more win your true image.

Jesus, in the presence of the Immaculate Heart of Mary please tell me now: This is your mother.

Holy Mother of God, my mother, protect me, guide me and nourish me with the heavenly bread that you have given to the world.
Cover me with your maternal mantle of purity that I may always say NO to the temptations of your adversary, the enemy of my soul.

A Prayer for Resisting Temptation

Dear Lord Jesus,

I try hard not to stumble in my walk of faith, but you know the temptations that I face today. I experience desires that lead me away from you. Sometimes the temptation seems too strong for me. The desires seem too powerful to resist.

I need your help in this battle. I cannot walk alone, Lord. I need your guidance. My flesh is weak. Please help me. Fill me with the power of your Holy Spirit to give me strength. I cannot make it without you.

Your Word promises that I will not be tempted beyond what I can bear. I ask for your strength to stand up against temptation each and every time I encounter it.

Help me to stay awake spiritually so that temptation won’t catch me by surprise. I want to always pray so that I won’t be dragged away by evil desires. Help me keep my spirit well fed with your Holy Word so that I remember you are living in me. And you are greater than every power of darkness and sin that is in the world.

Lord, you overcame Satan’s temptations. You understand my struggle. So I ask for the strength you had when facing  Satan’s attacks in the wilderness. Don’t let me be dragged away by my own desires. Let my heart obey your Word.

Your Word also tells me you will provide a way of escape from temptation. Please, Lord, give me the wisdom to walk away when I am tempted, and the clarity to see the way out that you will provide. Thank you, Lord, that you are a faithful deliverer and that I can count on your help in my time of need. Thank you for being here for me.

In the name of Jesus Christ, I pray,

Amen.

Prayer Against The Temptation To Return To My Addiction

Dear Lord, how I thank You for Your grace towards me for you have lifted me up out of the pit that my life was in and set my feet on the rock of my Salvation, which is Jesus Christ my Lord and Saviour. Thank You for freeing me from the shame and sin of my addiction, which has robbed me of so many of years of my life and caused me to lose not only my home but many of my friends and family as well.

Lord Jesus there are those that would seek to entice me back into the shadow from which I escaped and are trying to almost blackmail me into returning back to my life of crime and debauchery – but I have been set free and I do not want to return – keep me from temptation on those occasions when I feel alone and protect me from the pressures that I have been put under on certain occasions to return.

Lord I know that ALL my past sins have been forgiven and that I am clothed in the righteousness of Christ Jesus – keep me walking in the path of holiness and protect me from those that are still slaves to their addictions – I pray Lord that You will rescue those of my friends that are still enthralled in the world of addiction – I ask this in Jesus name.

Amen

The battle against temptations is strong

Yeshua, the battle against temptations is so strong, I struggle at times to fight it. Give me strength, Oh Lord, to walk away from the evil that tries to lure me in.

Father, cleanse my mind, body and soul of anything that is not pleasing to You. Help me to follow in the footsteps of Christ and keep pure and holy, for my body is the temple of the Holy Ghost.

Prayer to Escape Temptation and Trouble

Hearing God: As it is rare to hear an audible voice from God, one of the ways God will speak to us is through His written Word and a small still voice inside us. Before reviewing the scripture references below that address what the Bible says about temptation and trouble ask the Holy Spirit of revelation to join you. When certain verses capture your attention more than others, meditate and incorporate those into your personal daily prayer life.

Heavenly Father, we ask You to give complete knowledge of Your Will to this reader, and to give him/her Your spiritual wisdom and understanding as they seek You with all their hearts and lean not on their own understanding. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.

Prayer for God’s Protection Against Temptation

Father God you alone are my God, Lord please protect me. Every where I go, sin is right there with me, and many times it is really difficult to fight and not fall into temptation.

God, please let my heart be opened to your great love and be submissive to the Holy Spirit. I want to allow the Holy Spirit to enter me and grant me the strength to overcome all the temptations. God when I can’t do it together with you, please fight on my behalf for I am weak.

Oh Lord, I believe that your most inner desire is to protect me, for this is what you said when you came to earth, that you came to lay down your life for the sheep in order to protect us and give us eternal life.

Jesus, please protect me from evil desires that don’t come from you. In my inner heart I delight in your word and in your love for me. God, your love moves me every day and I wish to not betray you but to be faithful to you at all times.

In the name of Jesus, I pray. Amen!

Praying to Avoid Temptation

Dear Heavenly Father,

Thank You for today. Thank You for my life and my husband’s life. I pray over our marriage right now and ask that You would protect us from the attacks of the enemy. He has been trying to tear us down, distract us, frustrate us, and tempt us to sin against each other.  I pray that we would be able to resist the enemy and flee temptation with the strength that You give us. May You empower us to overcome struggles, with the hope of better days. I pray that we would never stop fleeing from temptation. However, in moments of weakness please help us to give each other forgiveness. Help us to support one another and keep each other accountable on a daily basis. I pray that if there is any sin in me that You would make me aware so that I may repent and never turn back to it. I also pray that if my husband has sin that he also would repent of it. Transform our hearts and purify us, O Lord! We desire to have a holy marriage in Jesus’ name AMEN!

A Prayer for Strength When Facing Temptation(s)

Dear Lord Jesus, as you know, this was one of the very first Scriptures I committed to memory, as a young believer, in the summer of ’68. It’s no less timely, necessary and encouraging today as it was then. The seizing power of temptation in my life is just as real today as it was over forty years ago.

It would be one thing if temptation came like junk mail—easy to recognize, ignore, and trash. But at times temptation comes with such alluring and promissory power, that “standing up under it” is an incredibly difficult thing to do. I would despair, and question the reality of my faith, if I didn’t have the assurance that temptation itself is not sin (James 1:13-15). Jesus, the very fact that you suffered the full fury of temptation also gives me hope and keeps me sane (Heb. 4:15).

What encourages me the most about in this Scripture is the “commonality” of every temptation and the promise of a “way out” of any temptation. This assures me that no matter how dark, foolish, or destructive are the things that enter my mind, such temptations are not unique to me. Anything I’ll ever be tempted to do, is common to other believers, just like me. I’m not terrible because I’m tempted, but I am tempted to do terrible things. Though this saddens me, it shouldn’t shock me; but it greatly gladdens me to know you will always provide a way of escape.

Jesus, help us resist the seducing power of temptation, where it rages the most powerfully in this season of life—in the very hour of this particular day. Whether our temptations are sexual, financial, relational, or alcohol or drug related, it makes no difference—show us the way of escape, and give us strength to choose that way. And when we falter and fail, grant us grace to flee to you for mercy and restoration. Oh, Jesus, was a wonderful and merciful Savior you are. So very Amen we pray, in your strong and grace-full name.

Short Prayers Against Temptation

This morning and all mornings, as we face the day daunted by expectations others place upon us, weighed down by burdens, unsure of outcomes, opposed, alone, afraid, remind us that you faced all this and more, that we might loose the chains that bind us, rise above and beyond the troubles of this world, and know peace in your embrace.

***

Heavenly King, I lay down my life before You, I surrender my all to You. Help me, Oh Loving Father, to break these chains of temptation. Tear down these strongholds that are weakening me. Bind every evil spirit that attempts to lure me into the dark abyss.

***

Lord, if you could resist the temptation to be anything other than suffering servant, how can I not resist the promises of this world, look to you and follow in your footsteps.

***

Lead me to the cross, Oh gentle Savior. Rid me of myself because I belong to You. In Your presence is where I want to be.

Yahweh, lead me to victory as I overcome the battle of sin and become a mighty, righteous warrior for You. In Jesus mighty name I pray, Amen!

***

This world tempts us with bright lights, city streets, tempting sights and sounds. This world tempts us with objects of desire, raises us up,
knocks us down.

This world tempts us to believe its lies, challenges us to live them.

This world tempts us to reject our God, accuses us and hates us.

This world tempts us to disbelieve the truth that nothing can defeat us.

***

Lord, I am assailed from within and without; self-doubt and loathing, disrespect and insult. The world closes in, swamps and would consume me. I am sinking yet will not drown. For you endured all this and much more, beaten, hated scourged and whipped, humiliated and killed,
yet rising victorious, to demonstrate the paradox of strength through weakness, love conquering all. I am weak but through the grace of Christ I am strong and together we shall overcome.

***

These evil entities try to control my thoughts daily. I rebuke them, in Jesus’ mighty name! The hand of Lucifer will never fall on me, Oh Lord, for I am covered under Your precious Blood.

***

Lead me, guide me, walk beside me, so that I may not stray or fall by the wayside but if I do, Lord, please pick me up and hold me in Your loving arms.

Lord, be in the decisions I must make today, open my ears to your guidance and steer my footsteps from temptation.

***

Today is going to be a struggle.
The act of rising, journeying, conversation, bustling crowds, those I work with, people I meet. Be my confidence, my assurance, the words that I speak. Be my freedom, my guidance, as I walk through these streets.
Today is going to be a struggle.
Keep my head above water, my eyes fixed on you.

***

Lord, your loving kindness, and tender mercies are new every morning, therefore I choose to repent now before it is too late. Temptations will not get the better of me because I am a warrior in Your army and the battle is already won.

And, as I emerge victorious, as my sins are washed away, I will stand completely engrossed in Your holy presence. For I am forever yours, and you are eternally mine. AMEN

Prayer to Overcome Temptation

Most holy Virgin Immaculate, my Mother Mary, to thee who art the Mother of my Lord, the queen of the universe, the advocate, the hope, the refuge of sinners, I who am the most miserable of all sinners, have recourse this day.

I venerate thee, great queen, and I thank thee for the many graces thou hast bestowed upon me even unto this day; in particular for having delivered me from the hell which I have so often deserved by my sins.

I love thee, most dear Lady; and for the love I bear thee, I promise to serve thee willingly for ever and to do what I can to make thee loved by others also. I place in thee all my hopes for salvation; accept me as thy servant and shelter me under thy mantle, thou who art the Mother of mercy.

And since thou art so powerful with God, deliver me from all temptations, or at least obtain for me the strength to overcome them until death. From thee I implore a true love for Jesus Christ. Through thee I hope to die a holy death.

My dear Mother, by the love thou bearest to Almighty God, I pray thee to assist me always, but most of all at the last moment of my life. Forsake me not then, until thou shalt see me safe in heaven, there to bless thee and sing of thy mercies through all eternity. Such is my hope.  Amen.

Bible Verses for Resisting Temptation

Keep watch and pray, so that you will not give in to temptation. For the spirit is willing, but the body is weak. (Mark 14:38)

The Spirit and your desires are enemies of each other. They are always fighting each other and keeping you from doing what you feel you should. (Galatians 5:17)

Sin is crouching at your door; it desires to have you, but you must rule over it. Genesis 4:7

No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it. (1 Corinthians 10:13)

And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one. (Matthew 6:13)

Let us, then, hold firmly to the faith we profess. For we have a great High Priest who has gone into the very presence of God—Jesus, the Son of God. Our High Priest is not one who cannot feel sympathy for our weaknesses. On the contrary, we have a High Priest who was tempted in every way that we are, but did not sin. (Hebrews 4:14-15)

Keep watch and pray that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak. (Matthew 26:41)

The woman stared at the fruit. It looked beautiful and tasty. She wanted the wisdom that it would give her, and she ate some of the fruit. Her husband was there with her, so she gave some to him, and he ate it too. (Genesis 3:6)

But those who want to get rich fall into temptation and are caught in the trap of many foolish and harmful desires, which pull them down to ruin and destruction. (1 Timothy 6:9)

Happy are those who remain faithful under trials, because when they succeed in passing such a test, they will receive as their reward the life which God has promised to those who love him. If we are tempted by such trials, we must not say, “This temptation comes from God.” For God cannot be tempted by evil, and he himself tempts no one. But we are tempted when we are drawn away and trapped by our own evil desires. Then our evil desires conceive and give birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, gives birth to death. (James 1:12-15)

When he arrived at the place, he said to them, “Pray that you will not fall into temptation.” (Luke 22:40)

So then, submit yourselves to God. Resist the Devil, and he will run away from you. (James 4:7)

If you are guided by the Spirit, you won’t obey your selfish desires. (Galatians 5:16)
