Prayer While Doing Laundry

Laundry refers to the washing of clothing and other textiles, and, more broadly, their drying and ironing as well. Laundry has been part of history since humans began to wear clothes, so the methods by which different cultures have dealt with this universal human need are of interest to several branches of scholarship. Laundry work has traditionally been highly gendered, with the responsibility in most cultures falling to women (formerly known as laundresses or washerwomen).

Prayer While Doing Laundry

I find you so close to me right here, dear Lord. Surrounded by the dirt and scattered clothing of my family, I find this an ideal spot to pray with you. No one comes near here so it is quiet, and it gives me a chance to reflect on the many blessings of my life.As I pick up their clothing and sort it, I ask you to give each of them what is needed most in their lives.

I fill the washer with my husband’s shirts and socks, and ask that you bless him as he wears them to work each day. Give him the grace to see that his work is holy and open his eyes to see the sacredness of each moment of life.

As I sort the tiny socks or the overalls of the children, I smile and remember how blessed I am to have them in my life.

I sort the larger teenage clothing and wonder at how fast these clothes have become larger sizes – and how quickly children grow up. I ask your help as I guide them through each new phase of their lives.

Give me a love that is endless, a heart that forgives them and the humility to ask for their forgiveness when that is right. Help me keep them from danger, and help me to let go and trust you when it is time to do that.

I try so hard to be perfect but lead me to remember that it is here in the smudged, disorganized and disheveled part of life that I find you the nearest.

Thank you, dearest Lord, for so much grace in my life!

Prayer for doing laundry

Holy God, three in one.
Give me your perspective as I wash these clothes.

Creator, Father,
Thank you for providing the clothes that we wear
and for all the resources
and technology we use to wash them.
Help us to remember all the skill and effort of the people
who designed and assembled these garments.
Bless them, wherever they may be.

Jesus,
Make us more like you.
Give me your humility as I serve my loved ones.
May we find our identity in you and not in these clothes.
Help us to be good stewards of what you’ve given us,
but not to treasure them beyond their purpose.

Holy Spirit,
Use this task to remind me that you’re continually
cleansing me and my loved ones.
Prepare us for tomorrow as we put on our clean clothes,
that we may have a fresh start to serve and honor you.

A Blessing For Laundry

Father, the one who clothes me and provides me with all that I need, bless those that wear these clothes.

Jesus you have clothed me in righteousness and love, may the wearer of these clothes be equally clothed in your grace.

Holy Spirit may you protect each clothes wearer with the full armour of God that they might be rooted and established in your love in all the difficulties they face in this world. May these clothes bring them the comfort of your love and may they in turn be a vessel for your holy love and blessing in the world.

Father – thank you that you see me while I wash and do housework. Thank you that you approve of the work I do for my family. Direct the path of each person who wears these socks.

Father, help me learn to value things that are unseen in this world and forgive me for worshipping the idol of success and human accalades. My desire is to find satisfaction in you alone.

Jesus- Thank you for the sacrifice of your life on my behalf. Teach me how to accept sacrifice with joy, as you did your mission here on earth. Change my heart to care for my children, as you cared for all of God’s children. Remind me that caring for my family is participating in your redemptive Kingdom. Guard the dreams and sleep of the owners of these pyjamas, may they find their rest in you.

Holy Spirit- thank you that are here with me in this laundry room and throughout my day. Make your presence known to me when I ache for adult conversation and interaction. I ask that, through Jesus, you would speak to me the words of the Father when thoughts thunder in my head. And may your presence bring the fruit of the Spirit in my life and I ask that it grow in the lives of those that wear these pants and shirts.

Above all these prayers, may you be glorified in my life, in my home, and in the lives of those that wear these clothes. And bless the tasks I perform today that they might become holy acts of worship.
