Qur’an On Non-Muslims

This article covers verses from the Qur’an on non-Muslims.

The Qur’an has many verses on Kafir or “those who reject faith”. One Arabic language analog to the infidel, referring to non-Muslims, is kafir (“kaafir”, “kufr” or “kuffar”) from the root K-F-R, which connotes covering or concealing. The term KFR may also refer to disbelieving in something, being ungrateful for something provided, or denunciation of a certain matter or lifestyle. Another term, sometimes used synonymously, is a mushrik, “polytheist” or “conspirer”, which more immediately connotes the worship of gods other than Allah.

In the Quran, the term kafir is first applied to the unbelieving Meccans, and their attempts to refute and revile Muhammad. Later, Muslims are ordered to keep apart from them, defend themselves from their attacks, and finally take the offensive against them.

The Qur’an (القرآن)

(Note: All translations of the Qur’an are those of Yusuf Ali and Marmaduke Pickthall unless otherwise noted. The Qur’an and thus the quotes contained on this page make use of the majestic plural.)

Surah 2 The Calfسورة البقرة‎

  • Ali:
6As to those who reject Faith, it is the same to them whether thou warn them or do not warn them; they will not believe.
  • Pickthall:
6As for the Disbelievers, Whether thou warn them or thou warn them not it is all one for them; they believe not.

    • The Qur’an (القرآن), Sura 2:6 (The Calf, سورة البقرة‎)

  • Ali:
24But if ye cannot- and of a surety ye cannot- then fear the Fire whose fuel is men and stones,- which is prepared for those who reject Faith.
  • Pickthall:
24And if ye do it not – and ye can never do it – then guard yourselves against the Fire prepared for disbelievers, whose fuel is of men and stones.

    • The Qur’an (القرآن), Sura 2:24 (The Calf, سورة البقرة‎)

  • Ali:
89And when there comes to them a Book from Allah, confirming what is with them,- although from of old they had prayed for victory against those without Faith,- when there comes to them that which they (should) have recognised, they refuse to believe in it but the curse of Allah is on those without Faith.
90Miserable is the price for which they have sold their souls, in that they deny (the revelation) which Allah has sent down, in insolent envy that Allah of His Grace should send it to any of His servants He pleases: Thus have they drawn on themselves Wrath upon Wrath. And humiliating is the punishment of those who reject Faith.
  • Pickthall:
89And when there cometh unto them a scripture from Allah, confirming that in their possession – though before that they were asking for a signal triumph over those who disbelieved – and when there cometh unto them that which they know (to be the truth) they disbelieve therein. The curse of Allah is on disbelievers.
90Evil is that for which they sell their souls: that they should disbelieve in that which Allah hath revealed, grudging that Allah should reveal of His bounty unto whom He will of His slaves. They have incurred anger upon anger. For disbelievers is a shameful doom.

99We have sent down to thee Manifest Signs (ayah), and none reject them but those who are perverse.
  • Pickthall:
98Who is an enemy to Allah, and His angels and His messengers, and Gabriel and Michael! Then, lo! Allah (Himself) is an enemy to the disbelievers.
99Verily We have revealed unto thee clear tokens, and only miscreants will disbelieve in them.

Nor marry (your girls) to unbelievers until they believe: A man slave who believes is better than an unbeliever, even though he allures you. Unbelievers do (but) beckon you to the Fire. But Allah beckons by His Grace to the Garden (of bliss) and forgiveness, and makes His Signs clear to mankind: That they may celebrate His praise.

  • Ali:
2Allah! There is no god but He,-the Living, the Self-Subsisting, Eternal.
3It is He Who sent down to thee (step by step), in truth, the Book, confirming what went before it; and He sent down the Law (of Moses) and the Gospel (of Jesus) before this, as a guide to mankind, and He sent down the criterion (of judgment between right and wrong).
4Then those who reject Faith in the Signs of Allah will suffer the severest penalty, and Allah is Exalted in Might, Lord of Retribution.
  • Pickthall:
2Allah! There is no god save Him, the Alive, the Eternal.
3He hath revealed unto thee (Muhammad) the Scripture with truth, confirming that which was (revealed) before it, even as He revealed the Torah and the Gospel.
4Aforetime, for a guidance to mankind; and hath revealed the Criterion (of right and wrong). Lo! those who disbelieve the revelations of Allah, theirs will be a heavy doom. Allah is Mighty, Able to Requite (the wrong).

  • And leave those who take their religion as amusement and diversion and whom the worldly life has deluded. But remind with the Qur’an, lest a soul be given up to destruction for what it earned; it will have other than Allah no protector and no intercessor. And if it should offer every compensation, it would not be taken from it. Those are the ones who are given to destruction for what they have earned. For them will be a drink of scalding water and a painful punishment because they used to disbelieve

And those who are slain in the way of God, He will not send their works astray.” 47:4
  • When you meet the unbelievers in the battlefield strike off their heads and when you have laid them low, bind your captives firmly. Then grant them their freedom or take ransom from them, until War shall lay down her armour. Thus shall you do. Had Allah willed, He could Himself have punished them (without your help); but He has ordained it thus that He might test you, the one by the other. As for those who are slain in the cause of Allah, He will not allow their works to perish. He will vouchsafe them guidance and ennoble their state; He will admit them to the Paradise He has made known to them. Believers! if you help Allah, Allah will help you and make you strong.
