Friendship is a relationship of mutual affection between people. Friendship is a stronger form of interpersonal bond than an association. Friendship has been studied in academic fields such as communication, sociology, social psychology, anthropology, and philosophy. Various academic theories of friendship have been proposed, including social exchange theory, equity theory, relational dialectics, and attachment styles.

Friendship

Sometimes life is never fair
when you think your friends are always there
the years you think will be the best
fun and games you never rest
you’re all together side by side
they always helped you when you cried
It’s hard to see, but very clear
It’s like a crystal, like a tear
you see them now in memories
the way they laugh and speak and tease,
but in your heart you’ll always know
they are by your side they’ll never go.

More than Friendship

When I think of you going away,
It makes me sad and get all mad,
When I hear your name it makes me smile,
My friends say I could go on for a mile,
But to let someone go away from you,
It’s like tearing your heart into pieces of two,
I just want to say,
That I still like you,
Even if we are just good friends,
I’ll still believe in you,
May God guide you where ever you go,
And remember I’m here to watch your light grow.

The Miracle of Friendship

There is a Miracle called Friendship
that dwells within the heart
and you don’t know how it happens
or when it even starts.

But the happiness it brings you always
gives a special lift and
you realize that Friendship
is God’s most precious gift.

Words of Friendship

Friends – always there no matter what the situation. There to share in the joy or to share in the sorrow. They are always willing to lend a hand no matter what needs to be done. A trusted person in my life!

Rapport – we have a relationship where there is harmony between two people over common issues. I can talk to them about anything. While we may not always agree, we can always discuss.

Esteem – this person who I call my friend always builds up my self esteem. They never put me down, they are encouraging and supportive. They build confidence!

Intimate – no matter what the situation, no matter what is going on in my life, I can talk with them. They show empathy and compassion allowing me to express myself without worrying about what they will think.

Neighbor – while they may not live beside me, they are neighborly in that they are kind, considerate, and are good company.

Dependable – people come and go in our lives. But my friend is one I know I can depend on. Always demonstrating reliability to be there when needed. And, they know the same applies to them if they need help.

Solidarity – we have common interests. Our views are in agreement and when they are not we can discuss it and sometimes agree to disagree.

Help – always will to help each other. If I call they will help – no matter what the situation or the job is.

Interested – care about what is going on in each others lives.

Pal – my pal, fun to be with, to share laughter and happiness. What a difference this friend of mine makes in my life.

Because You’re My Friend

When you are sad,
I will dry your tears.
When you are scared,
I will comfort your fears.

When you are worried,
I will give you hope.
When you are confused,
I will help you cope.

And when you are lost,
And can’t see the light.
I shall be your beacon
Shining ever so bright

This is my oath.
I pledge till the end.
Why you may ask?

Because you’re my friend.

A Friend For Life

A friend for life, is someone who,
Gives all they can, and is true to you.
A friend for life, is someone with,
A brain for knowledge, and knows every myth.

A friend for life, is someone who likes,
All the same things, like me and my yikes.
A friend for life, is someone who,
Will always be there, for me and you.

— Julie Hebert

A Real Friend

If I could take a minute
To help you understand
I am a better person
Because you are my friend.

And it really doesn’t matter
If we’re together or apart
For I swept you up into my hands
And placed you in my heart.

And if at any moment
You ever start to doubt
There’s a special bond between us
That I can’t live without.

You truely are the answers
To many of my prayers
When I told God I needed
Someone who really cares.

Someone to stand beside me
To help comfort and to cope
To remind me that there’s always
Some room for one to hope.

You’ve helped me through some things
That no one could help me through
I never knew what friendship was
Until I first met you.

And if I had one simple wish
It would surely be
That God would keep you in my life
Throughout all eternity.

And now I hope you realize
Just how much you mean to me
You are the definition
Of what a real, true friend should be.

Best Friend

I love you not only for what you are,
but for what I am when I am with you.
I love you not only for what you have made of yourself,
but for what you are making of me.

I love you because you have done more than any creed
could have done to make me good, and more than any
fate could have done to make me happy.
You have done it without a touch, without a word, without a sign.

You have done it by being yourself.
Perhaps that is what being a friend means, after all.

— Roy Croft

To my dearest friend

Thanks for being there
and smacking me into my senses
when I become so unaware.

Dearest friend
what would I do without you
your always there with me
telling me to always be me.

Dearest friend
wish I could take it back
all the stupid things I did…
all the hurtful words I said.

Dearest friend
why couldn’t I see…
that you were always there for me.
No matter what, you hold the key,
you’ve always seen something more in me.

Dearest friend
you’ve always cared more that I knew. It hurt you when I said I love
you to another, cuz I only saw you as a brother.

Dearest friend
I should have seen…
all the love you had for me.
Now that I do, I want to say… I love you more with each day! 🙂

No Other Place I Would Be

Inspired by, Miss Judie Mitchell, a friend to the end…

I’ve a message to send, I’ll convey at the end,
In hopes, the intended is listening,
To a gift I’ve received, and have come to believe,
Is the piece in my life that was missing.

There’s a place in my heart, that I’ve set apart,
It’s a place, where no other shall be,
It belongs to a friend, a friend to the end,
And to which, only they hold the key.

I dreamed, someone would come, not knowing where from,
Or to whom, that someone might be,
With my head in my hands, I could not understand,
All the things, that were burdened on me.

Seeing no way to win, and about to give in,
It was plain, that the world didn’t care,
When I thought I was done, with nowhere to run,
I looked up, to find you standing there.

I knew nothing of love, till, the one I speak of,
So graciously, held out their hand,
And has shown me the way, to get through each day,
Who has faith, in the man I now am.

There is no room for doubt, how things would have turned out,
If you hadn’t been watching my back,
Always there with a hug, or a much needed shove,
When I’m hurting, or falling off track.

There’s no possible way, I could ever repay,
How I wish, there were more I could do,
But, I thank you my friend, my friend to the end,
And, I’m making this promise to you.

Wherever you are, be it near, be it far,
The first thing, you’re going to see,
If your world should grow colder, look over your shoulder,
There is, NO OTHER PLACE I WOULD BE…

— Jim Thistle

I Found You

Somehow in this great big world
I found my way to you,
my friend across the computer lines
my heart, my soul, that’s who.
You always make me smile
with the mail you send my way.
You never fail to drop a line
each and every day.
Whenever I have hurried home
with something, I must share,
I find it just so comforting
that you are always there.
Encouragement you give me,
and a friendship that is true.
I’m glad my soul while reaching out
found someone…like you.

A Friendship So Dear

To me so dear is you my friend.
I hope and pray our friendship never ends.

As you are mine, and I am yours.
Our friendship has opened many doors.

Let’s never fight, and always laugh,
We’ll keep this friendship, under glass.

For if it breaks, then we’ll know.
A friendship like ours, can take more than a throw.

— Julie Hebert

If Only …

If only I could be the one that you really need
If only I could follow you across the open seas
If only I could hold you in my arms so tight
If only I could lay with you and talk through out the night
If only I could share with you the beauty of the trees
and share with you the gentleness of the summer breeze
Sit with you and listen to the laughter of a child
Sit with you in silence watching creatures in the wild
Listen to the stories you tell of days gone by
Be there just to hold you if a memory made you cry
Sit with you and listen to the chirping of a bird
Smiling as you tell me it’s the sweetest sound you’ve heard
So if you ever find the time reach out and type my name
the dreams above I mentioned will always be the same
If my life was different I know what I would do
I’d stand tall there at your side and cross those seas with you.

A Friend is a Person

A Friend is a Person –
Who will help you in the hour of sickness;
Who will lend you a dollar without deducting the interest;
Who will help you up hill when you are sliding down;
Who will defend you in the hour when others speak evil of you;
Who will believe in your innocence until you admit your guilt;
Who will say behind your back what he says to your face;
Who will shake hands with you wherever he meets you, even though you wear patches; and
Who will do all these things just because he likes you!

— Dorothy C. Retsloff

I’ll Always Be Your Friend

You were with me through all the good times and bad,
You always made me feel happy when I was sad,
I’ll never have another friend like you,
And that is definitely true,

I’ve never known anyone who smiles or
laughs as much as you do,
That’s always been the best part about you,
You’ll always be my best friend,
Even after the end,

I’ll stay with you through thick and thin,
I’ll be there for everything,
I’ll listen when you need to talk,
I’ll hold you when you need to cry,

I’ll stay with you when you have no one else,
I can defiantly promise you this,
I’ll always be your friend.

Dear Lord

Dear Lord, my friends have been to me
Interpreters of love divine,
And in their kindness I have seen
Thine everlasting mercy shine!

And so I Pray on this Thy day,
That Thou wilt search trough gifts of Thine,
And choose Thy rarest, fairest ones,
To shower upon these friends of mine!

We have been friends together,
In sunshine and in shade

— Martha Shell Nicholson

We Have Been Friends Together

We have been friends together,
In sunshine and in shade;
Since first beneath the chestnut-trees
In infancy we played.
But coldness dwells within thy heart,
A cloud is on thy brow;
We have been friends together –
Shall a light word part us now?

We have been gay together;
We have laugh’d at little jests;
For the fount of hope was gushing
Warm and joyous in our breasts.
But laughter now hath fled thy lip,
And sullen glooms thy brow;
We have been gay together –
Shall a light word part us now?

We have been sad together,
We have wept, with bitter tears,
O’er the grass-grown graves, where slumber’d
The hopes of early years.
The voices which are silent there
Would bid thee clear thy brow;
We have been sad together –
Oh! what shall part us now?

To an Old Friend

When we have lived our little lives and wandered all their byways through,
When we’ve seen all that we shall see and finished all that we must do,
When we shall take one backward look off yonder where our journey ends,
I pray that you shall be as glad as I shall be that we were friends.

Time was we started out to find the treasures and the joys of life;
We sought them in the land of gold through many days of bitter strife.
When we were young we yearned for fame; in search of joy we went afar,
Only to learn how very cold and distant all the strangers are.

When we have met all we shall meet and know what destiny has planned,
I shall rejoice in that last hour that I have known your friendly hand;
I shall go singing down the way off yonder as my sun descends
As one who’s had a happy life, made glorious by the best of friends.

— Edgar A. Guest

3 days have gone

3 days have gone
I still think you’re the only one
No other can give me so much fun
Not even the rays of the morning sun

3 hours I’ve waited
Thinking I wouldn’t end up jaded
You got me so frustrated
Felt like love has faded

3 years have passed
Since I saw the shadow that you cast
Time is running too fast
Will our friendship forever last?

— Author Unknown

Promises Made Long Ago

When we were little,
We were easily tickled,
By cartoons,
And running around.

We’d make silly bets,
And promises to be kept,
And always swear,
To never back down.

Now that we’re grown up,
And drink coffee from a cup.
Things have changed,
Quite a bit.

But we always kept that promise,
to always stay friends til the end,
And that’s why,
you’ll always be my friend.

— Julie Hebert

Friends

Sharing thoughts…
Wiping tears…
Being there for one-another
through the years.
Giving advice, to make things right.
Showing you care by holding me tight.
When the road gets rough.
And the people keep on going.
You always seem to be there,
and our friendship keep on growing.

Friends

Ain’t it fine when things are going
Topsy-turvy and askew
To discover someone showing
Good old-fashioned faith in you?

Ain’t it good when life seems dreary
And your hopes about to end,
Just to feel the handclasp cheery
Of a fine old loyal friend?

Gosh! one fellow to another
Means a lot from day to day,
Seems we’re living for each other
In a friendly sort of way.

When a smile or cheerful greetin’
Means so much to fellows sore,
Seems we ought to keep repeatin’
Smiles an’ praises more an’ more.

— Edgar A Guest

You Just Call Out My Name

You just call out my name,
And you know where ever I am
I’ll come running, running
To see you again…
Winter, Spring, Summer or Fall
All you have to do is call
And I’ll be there…
You’ve got a friend,
Ain’t it good to know?
You’ve got a Friend.

— Author Unknown

Days With You

A day with you,
Was always so cool.
I loved to just,
Hang around.

We never had to,
Plan anything to do.
We could just sit,
Or walk around town.

We’d talk and laugh,
About things we’d heard.
Or maybe about,
The boy next door.

No matter the topic,
We’d always find logic.
And that’s why,
Our friendship will never bore.

— Julie Hebert

I’ll Be Your Friend

Walk with me if you want
walk beside me
Talk to me if you want
talk to me
Listen if you want
I’ll listen back
ask and seek advice
don’t be afraid
I’ll help
I will always be there
In good times and bad times
In happy and sad times
I will follow you through life
I will be your friend.

Friendship – Altruism Quotes

A friend forever

When I was little, maybe six or seven
I asked the Lord up in heaven,
dear Lord where can I get a friend?
one that will stick with me till the end?
In a silence a voice I heard:
“Lift up your head!”
“For I am your friend, and I am here to stay.
As each day continues to fade away!”

An Irish Friendship Wish

May there always be work for your hands to do;
May your purse always hold a coin or two;
May the sun always shine on your window pane;
May a rainbow be certain to follow each rain;
May the hand of a friend always be near you;
May God fill your heart with gladness to cheer you.

— Author Unknown

A Wish for a Friend

Wishing you a rainbow
For sunlight after showers –
Miles and miles of Irish smiles
For golden happy hours –
Shamrocks at your doorway
For luck and laughter too,
And a host of friends that never ends
Each day your whole life through!

— Author Unknown

A Blessing for a Friend

May the blessing of the rain be on you –
the soft sweet rain.
May it fall upon your spirit so that all the little flowers
may spring up,
and shed their sweetness on the air.

May the blessing of the great rains be on you,
may they beat upon your spirit
and wash it fair and clean, and leave there
many a shining pool where the blue of
heaven shines, and sometimes a star.

— Author Unknown

An Irish Wish

May the lilt of Irish laughter lighten every load,
May the mist of Irish magic shorten every road,
May you taste the sweetest pleasures that fortune e’re bestowed,
And may all your friends remember all the favors you are owed.

May You Have

May you have:
A world of wishes at your command
God and his angels close at hand

Because I know I’ve got you.

Friendship is the thing we have,
and I’m glad to share it with you.
In times of sadness you’re always there,
to help what I’m going through.
We’ll stay together forever and ever,
even when there’s nothing to do,
I always know I’ll be ok,
because I know I’ve got you.

Life Without Friend

Life without Best friend
Is like the dawn without the sun.
Life without friendship…
Is like the sky without the moon
When the evening has begun.
Life without best friend
Is like a rose without rain.
Life without best friend
Every second a pinch and pain.
Life without friendship…
Just wouldn’t be the same.
Life would never be same
Once best friend is not in game.
Life without best friend
Is like a ship without a sea.
Life without best friend
Just could not be
Without a friend like you for me,
Without best friend neither can I live
Nor can you, not anybody!

— Author Unknown

Flattery

The friend who holds up before me the mirror,
conceals not my smallest faults,
warns me kindly, reproves me affectionately,
when I have not performed my duty,
he is my friend,
however little he may appear so.
But if a man praises and lauds me,
never reproves me, overlooks my faults,
and forgives them before I have repented,
he is my enemy,
however much he may appear my friend.

— Herder

Alone

“Lying, thinking
Last night
How to find my soul a home
Where water is not thirsty
And bread loaf is not stone
I came up with one thing
And I don’t believe I’m wrong
That nobody,
But nobody
Can make it out here alone.”

— Maya Angelou

Friend

A friend is one who needs us and one whom we need.
Around us may be many whose companionship we enjoy,
but were they suddenly to drop out of their places there would
be no soreness, no sense of deprivation, no lack of comfort.

We do not need them, neither do they need us.
A friend is one to whom we cling, though many leagues of space separate us.
Though days pass with no sight of his face or word from his pen,
we know our loved ones love us and that when we meet again
we will be on the same old terms: we shall begin where we left off.

A friend is one in whom we can confide. The secret chambers of our
soul open to his touch on the latch.
Thousands imagine their friends are numbered by scores,
but if subjected to these tests every one of them would fall into the
great sea of common humanity.

— Dinger

In The Company Of Women

“Make me laugh over coffee,
make it a double, make it frothy
so it seethes in our delight.
Make my cup overflow
with your small happiness.
I want to hoot and snort and cackle and chuckle.
Let your laughter fill me like a bell.
Let me listen to your ringing and singing
as Billie Holiday croons above our heads.”

— by January Gill-O’Neil

What is the greatest gift?

“What is the greatest gift?
Could it be the world itself—the oceans, the meadowlark,
the patience of the trees in the wind?
Could it be love, with its sweet clamor of passion?

Something else—something else entirely
holds me in thrall.
That you have a life that I wonder about
more than I wonder about my own.“

— by Mary Oliver

In Tune

I don’t remember when I first began
To call you “friend.”
One day, I only know,
The vague companionship that I’d seen grow
So imperceptibly, turned gold, and ran
In tune with all I’d thought, or dared to plan.

Since then, you’ve been to me like music, low,
Yet clear; a fire that throws its warm, bright glow
On me as on each woman, child, and man,
And common thing that lies within its rays;

You’ve been like wholesome food that stays the cry
Of hungry, groping minds; and like a star –
A self-sufficient star – you make me raise
My utmost being to a higher sky,
In tune, like you, with earth, yet wide, and far.

— Florence Steigerwalt

To All My Friends

“To all my friends who have been with me in weakness
when water falls rush down my two sides

To all my friends who have felt me in anguish
when this earthen back breaks between the crack of two blades

To all my friends who have held me in rage
when fire tears through swallows behind tight grins

I know you
I see you
I hear you“

— by HAUNTIE

These Three

Three men are my friends:
he that loves me,
he that hates me,
and he that is indifferent to me.

Who loves me teaches me tenderness.
Who hates me teaches me caution.
Who is indifferent to me teaches me self-reliance.

— Dinger

My Friends

“why be evasive
when you can listen to an audio book
about a biologist
on a mysterious expedition
to Area X
an area cut off from civilization
today I’ve spoken to no one
and I feel fine
but feelings aren’t facts my friends
and I’ve eaten the last of the cheese
and table water crackers
and I have no salary
but I will hold you”

— by Ali Power

Friends Like You

Friends like you keep me from feeling blue
You accept me and always let me be
I can count on you always doesn’t matter the day
Our friendship has stood the test
It is sometimes hard to believe we are still the best

Our friendship once like new wine but now with years gone by
it has stood the test of time
I count my blessings everyday
you are the best I often say

You always care, you never dare
A friend indeed, you fill a need
Together we grow old, our friendship is like gold
The years go by but I will not sigh.

Thank you my friend my dear
for always being clear
Because friends like you
are so special too!

— Catherine Pulsifer

Sybil

“Your head is wild with books, Sybil,
But your heart is good and kind—
I feel a new contentment near you,
A pleasure of the mind.

Glad should I be to sit beside you,
And let long hours glide by,
Reading, through all your sweet narrations,
The language of your eye.”

— by Julia Ward Howe

On Friendship

“And a youth said, Speak to us of Friendship.
And he answered, saying:
Your friend is your needs answered.
He is your field which you sow with love and reap with thanksgiving.
And he is your board and your fireside.
For you come to him with your hunger, and you seek him for peace.”

— by Khalil Gibran

The Helping Hand

If when climbing up life’s ladder
You can reach a hand below,
Just to help the other fellow,
Up another rung, or so

It will be that in the future,
When you’re growing weary, too,
You’ll be glad to find there’s someone
Who will lend a hand to you

— Author Unknown

Red Brocade

“The Arabs used to say,
When a stranger appears at your door,
feed him for three days
before asking who he is,
where he’s come from,
where he’s headed.
That way, he’ll have strength
enough to answer.
Or, by then you’ll be
such good friends
you don’t care.”

— by Naomi Shihab Nye

Be A Friend

Be a friend. You don’t need money:
Just a disposition sunny;
Just the wish to help another
Get along some way or other;
Just a kindly hand extended
Out to one who’s unbefriended;

Just the will to give or lend,
This will make you someone’s friend.

Be a friend. You don’t need glory.
Friendship is a simple story.
Pass by trifling errors blindly,
Gaze on honest effort kindly,
Cheer the youth who’s bravely trying,
Pity him who’s sadly sighing;

Just a little labor spend
On the duties of a friend.

Be a friend. The pay is bigger
(Though not written by a figure)
Than is earned by people clever
In what’s merely self-endeavor.
You’ll have friends instead of neighbors
For the profits of your labors;

You’ll be richer in the end
Than a prince, if you’re a friend

— Edgar A Guest

1383

“Long Years apart – can make no
Breach a second cannot fill –
The absence of the Witch does not
Invalidate the spell –

The embers of a Thousand Years
Uncovered by the Hand
That fondled them when they were Fire
Will stir and understand –“

— by Emily Dickinson

Old Friends

Though you are in your shining days,
Voices among the crowd
And new friends busy with your praise,
Be not unkind or proud,
But think about old friends the most:
Time’s bitter flood will rise,
Your beauty perish and be lost
For all eyes but these eyes.

— William Butler Yeats
